An apology to asylum seekers
Holy Smokes
Its all happening.
http://www.dailylife.com.au/news-and...220-334j3.html
What I don't get, you've got Afganistani refugees turning up on the door step of Australia and the UK. They've travelled over ground crossing many countries to get there. Sure, if you've got to get out then get out, but what's wrong with the many decent countries you've crossed before you arrive in Oz or the UK. Surely the ambition here was to get out from where you could no longer live right?
Its all happening.

If life in Afghanistan is so truly bad, you are being persecuted, starved, beaten, raped, tortured etc then PNG with safety, shelter, 3 square a day, medical care, religious freedom, education and leisure facilities should be tolerable - but apparently isn't

Other than Cambodia, you'll notice the distinct lack of countries between countries we have been bombing the shit out of, and here.

Here's are the countries which are signatories of the UN treaties on the status of refugees.

The real reason they cross so many borders to try and settle in country A or country B, is the appeal of that country. And who can blame them.

That's why signatory countries matter.
Thailand government has failed to establish a procedure for determining refugee status therefore refugees and asylum seekers are prosecuted and detained under Thailand law (for illegal immigrants)

Yes, but if the country you are trying to claim it in doesn't recognise the idea of a refugee and instead treats you as an illegal immigrant, a criminal, subject to detention and no legal status - it's not exactly going to go well, is it? (mind australia is headed well down this road)
That's why signatory countries matter.

Did some mention economic migrants?

Now the problem is off the back of racism, drownings and a lack of better ideas; australia is attempting to call them all criminals - and forget that 'stopping the boats' was supposed to be phase 1 in a multi-stage process of dealing with the refugees and saving lives. Abbott/Morrison have basically quietly changed the policy to 'f**k off, we aren't interested, you can drop dead' - and probably broken international law and treaty obligations in the process.

The difference, in theory, is that there is refugee status to be recognised - there isn't that in non-signatory countries.

Here's the irony - Labor and the Greens present this fallacy of being the humanitarian and compassionate body of Australian politics. But in reality, their narrow minded, reckless policies do more harm than good (that shambles of an 'insulation scheme' for example).
When you cut all the crap, it's as simple as this:
People living in poorer, often 3rd world countries see an opportunity to put their life savings/possessions together to pay somebody to get them to a new life in the west. Where are they going to go? NEWSFLASH! - where it's easy to get in with the best life they can have, e.g. Britain (the softest welfare state in the world, where there's such a back log they're often housed for 6 months before processing and go awol anyway).
As for Australia, well get to Christmas Island and receive a shower, fresh clothes and free passage to on land processing.
As the original poster says. True, bona fide asylum seekers are fleeing war and hunger - fleeing for their lives. They don't pay $10,000 to a people smuggler, and cross multiple borders to do so.
Signing off.

Abbott's policy is SAVING lives. It was the shallow, naïve approach Rudd and Gillard took, by abolishing the previous border controls that has caused all of this mayhem. The drownings that have followed, and millions of dollars are the biggest travesty.

Sense, sanity, facts, reality, doing what's right, morals & ethics - these aren't going to get through. Maybe the UN or the ICC will shake that complacency.
