So what did you call her – I’m sure I can’t be the only one wondering which four letter words apart from the dreaded C word don’t make it through the sweary filter. Perhaps we should have a full list in the site FAQ

But that was your intent, right? To shock and insinuate you are using a four letter word by use of "****" and then when someone pulls you up on it to immediately act shocked and offended?

Or was I mistaken in my immediate thought, and you were actually referring to Elvira as a "Toffee Nosed Tree"? Or possibly "Toffee Nosed Dave"? "Toffee Nosed Lamp" perhaps?

I'm sure the word isn't filtered at all, unfortunately I wasn't prepared for the gutter minds of some of you.

"The United States of America is becoming less united by the day. A 30-year gap now exists in the average life expectancy between Mississippi, in the Deep South, and Connecticut, in prosperous New England. Huge disparities have also opened up in income, health and education depending on where people live in the US, according to a report published yesterday.

The American Human Development Index has applied to the US an aid agency approach to measuring well-being – more familiar to observers of the Third World – with shocking results. The US finds itself ranked 42nd in global life expectancy and 34th in survival of infants to age. Suicide and murder are among the top 15 causes of death and although the US is home to just 5 per cent of the global population it accounts for 24 per cent of the world's prisoners.

............

Despite the fact that the US spends roughly $5.2bn (£2.6bn) every day on health care, more per capita than any other nation in the world, Americans live shorter lives than citizens of every western European and Nordic country, bar Denmark."

I will take a few points from the Independent story and the other link to show the amount of ill-researched and/or downright false drivel that is often published about the United States, and that you have chosen to post here.

"A 30-year gap now exists in the average life expectancy between Mississippi, in the Deep South, and Connecticut, in prosperous New England."

Of the 51 entities that make up the United States, there is 8 years difference in life expectancy between the lowest, the District of Columbia at 72 and Hawaii, at 80 years.
http://www.femhealth.com/LongevityStatistics.html

"Asian-American males have the best quality of life and black Americans the lowest, with a staggering 50-year life expectancy gap between the two groups."

In 2002 the life expectancy of all Americans was 77.3 years. White males had an expectancy of 75.1 years and black males 68.8. (These figures have all risen since.) If Asian-American males lived 50 years longer on average than black males it means that their life expectancy in that year was 118.8 years, and the U. S. should be praised for providing an environment that enabled such longevity.

http://pediatrics.aappublications.or...115/3/619#SEC6

"The U.S. infant mortality rate is on par with that of Croatia, Cuba, Estonia, and Poland; if the U.S. infant mortality rate were the same as that of top-ranked Sweden, 21,000 more American babies would live to celebrate their first birthdays every year."

Cuba has indeed done wonders in reducing its infant mortality rate. They have done this by classing as stillbirths deliveries that are counted as infant mortality in advanced countries. This link from WHO shows, starting at page 36, the perinatal mortality rate (combined infant mortality and stillbirths) of the U. S. and U. K. to be the same, and Cuba's half again higher, in the company of Chile and Costa Rica.

http://www.who.int/reproductive-heal...ality/text.pdf

"Educational expenditures vary significantly by state; New Jersey and New York spend around $14,000 per pupil, Utah spends less than $6,000 per pupil."

But which states' students are posting the better grades on achievement tests?

Perhaps you could post links showing whether or not there are significant racial disparities in the U. K. with regard to crime and imprisonment rates, academic achievement, infant mortality, etc.
