THANKS EVERYONE!! 220 DAY K3 VISA JOURNEY OVER/WIFE IS FINALLY WITH ME IN THE U.S.!!
Hi fellow K3ers and also K1ers,
I want to share the great news that my wife's K3 visa interview went
real smooth. On the suggestion of a post from ProfsnlOcMan, I went
out to India to be with her at the interview on 5/12/03 to help
prevent any possible delay in the visa being issued. I brought some of
my original documents. It worked out real well!! The Chennai consulate
allowed me into the waiting room along with her at around 8:30 a.m.
The waiting room was crowded with a mix of K3 and tourist applicants.
The waiting room had about 100-200 chairs facing eight window counters
where an officer sits behind a glass window and speaks to the
applicants. All K3 applicants were called by their name and they then
submitted their documents and were given a courier label to fill out.
They then went to the cashier counter to pay the visa fee.
My wife was called up to different windows 3 separate times. The final
time was the interview with the consular officer. The first time she
was called I helped carry the photo albums to the counter but the
Indian gentleman told me to please have a seat. My wife then submitted
the 12 requested documents per their letter. An hour or so passed and
then my wife was called up by what I think was just a documentation
person (Indian lady) and she was given back a few extra supporting
documents we provided with our affidavit of support. The rest of our
file was fine and she then gave us a paper to come back in 45 minutes
at 1:30 p.m. The American consular officer called my wife's name
earlier at 1:25 p.m.
My wife in a hurry to the counter forgot to bring the file of extra
"just in case" documents like my original birth certificate etc., so I
went up with this file and also our extra photo albums. Upon seeing me
the consular officer said in respectful way, "Oh Mr. C is here also!".
I smiled in acknowledgement and stood about 2 feet behind her to the
side while he started the interview. Didn't want to appear like I was
coaching her.
They asked her three questions: 1. When was I born? 2. Where was I
born? 3. How did we meet? He was very respectful in listening to her.
Next he asked me directly what I do for a living. I explained to him
what I did. He also did a little chitchat mentioning that my wife was
moving from hot to cold. I agreed and mentioned that I moved to
Minnesota shortly after being born in Atlanta. He said he was from S.
Carolina. He didn't look at our wedding photos at all!! I think being
there was enough proof of our relationship. He then said let me see if
I can issue the visa. He looked up something on his computer and said
everything was fine. We will get the visa and wished us good luck. I
asked him if it was going to be sent by courier and he said we would
get in 3 days. He wished both of us good luck. We said our thankyous
and left the embassy ecstatic!! The next day we got her passport with
visa in it and the sealed brown envelope.
At the POE in Minneapolis on 5/18/03 we both stood in the line for US
Citizens/Residents and gave the sealed envelope along with the white
I-94 card/passport to the Immigration officer. The officer opened the
envelope and pointed to a room to go to. There we pulled a number and
waited for it to be called. When called my wife submitted the opened
contents of the sealed envelope to the officer and a few minutes later
was free to go. No questions period! The officer told us to relax and
wait before continuing the process since the visa is good for 2 years.
So our 220-day K3 journey has finally ended on 5/18/03 starting from
our I-130 receipt on 10/09/02. We wish everyone else the best and
thanks for all the encouragement/advice from everyone. On a side note
to all still waiting to be reunited, the long separation quickly fades
into a distant memory after you get the interview date and are finally
back together again. Take care!

Re: THANKS EVERYONE!! 220 DAY K3 VISA JOURNEY OVER/WIFE IS FINALLY WITH ME IN THE U.S.!!
Thanks everyone. Rohit the consulate was very organized and very
professional. I wish your fiance the best but she needn't worry if she
has all the documents with her. I recommend bringing the albums in
case they want more pics. Some had to show their albums. My wife
submitted small albums for their review, which they return later along
with some original documents. Have your fiance put all the documents
in the order it was requested on the interview letter (if she gets a
similar letter for k1 visa).
A little correction to my earlier post. I think the consular officer
reviewed our file/photos before calling us up but he didn't appear
concerned about more proof of our relationship. So going there was
definitely a plus in our case.
Thanks all and wish you all the best! The wait was definitely worth
it, even though its an emotional roller coaster at times.
