Hello,

does anyone know .....Will i have a credit file with nothing on it and zero credit when i am assigned a USA social security number? or does your British credit rating come with you?

You will be starting from scratch. If you have an American Express card in the UK, contact them about your move and they can help you get an "American" American Express card. If you search BE you will find many threads on establishing a credit rating in the US.

Yes you start at zero.

It is possible when applying for a credit card to send in extra information to appeal against being refused a card. So, if you can get hold of your British credit history (try experian.co.uk) you can send that in to a secret address and hope they like it.

They can actually do an international credit check and then that way you can actually use your UK credit history.

Not the response I expected, but it makes sense if your credit was bad.

Most people worry about having less credit than a newborn over here; being unable to get a credit card, finance a car, get a mortgage etc.

Oddly, you'll find that having no credit history is actually worse than having a negative credit history here!

actually i said good to know that they can do an international credit check so i CAN try and use my british credit history,,,, but thanks for a useless post

Just because an American financial institution CAN do an international check, it doesn't mean they WILL. Many members here have had a lot of trouble getting credit in the US. Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones, but don't be surprised if it isn't easy.

Anyway.

Credit won't follow you. And people won't do a international background check.

You might be able to get a broker to go through the hoops for a mortgage, but these days, a bit fat deposit will be more help. They won't bother for a credit card and it's not about the score, but actual US history that has most impact.
