Default Key West?

Hello,
We will be in Key West in January and would like to know the best
places to stay. Thanks! Oh yeah, we are two adults. The teenagers are
staying home this trip! Thanks!

For reasonably priced accomodations, you might try the Merlin Guesthouse on
Simonton St., or any of a number of B&Bs closer to the NE end of Duval.

While I am a big fan of the B&B in Key West. This is January we're
talking about one of the peak times of High Season. You might also want
to consider one of the motels in the New Town part of the island. True
it's not the same as greeting the morning on a Victorian veranda, but
there are reasonable shuttles and a water taxi that will transport you
from New Town to where the action is in Old Town. Compare prices of
both motels and Old Town B&Bs. One other thing you might consider,
national chain hotels like Hilton and Hyatt can be booked through
Priceline. The B&B establishments aren't part of any reservation
network. You have to contact and negotiate with them on an individual
basis. If you hit a B&B at an opportune time when they have had a
cancellation, they may give you the room with some kind of discount.
However, this is more likely to happen during Value Season when there
isn't much demand.

Into the mix, I'd like to suggest Fort Lauderdale. It has much more to
offer than many people realize. There's shopping at Ocean Place and Las
Olas. Fort Lauderdale has several world class museums. It has it's
Cuban section, many fine restaurants including Cap's Place a unique
seafood eatery on an island in the middle of the Inland Waterway. The
Snapper Soup is world famous, and many US Presidents plus world leaders
have dined there.

While hotel rates are also subject to High Season, some aren't quite as
high as Miami or Key West in January. You can check things out at Ft.
Lauderdale's web site: http://sunny.org Just North of all the big
high rise beach hotels are several smaller boutique hotels, where you
might get a complimentary breakfast along with a lower room rate. On
some parts of the beach they go all the way back to the Inland Waterway,
or 4 blocks from the beach. 8-)

A lot of guesthouses seemed fine to me, I stayed at the Wicker guesthouse,

Limited parking but it's important you get it.

The Pier House is convienent, has its own private beach and is
very close to Mallory Square so you can watch sunset from your own
beach. Others though might prefer some B&B off of Duval. There are
a wide variety from which to choose. Bargin hunters will stay away
from Duval up near where US 1 leaves the island. Last time I was
there they had a Budget Motel and a Days Inn. It's a long way
but taxi's are cheap. If high end resort type places are your
thing, there are several on both ends of Duval. They are forever
changing hands, but I believe Hilton still has a presence.

Fun, close to stuff, not too expensive, but nice.

I stay at the Pier House every year and have always been satisfied. The
best rooms IMO are the garden view rooms on the 2nd floor, e'g., 420 -
440. They will run you 250.00/night.
It's nice to have a small beach where you can sit and even swim in the
ocean in the morning, but there is also a pool which is deep enough to
dive into. They serve good breakfasts and lunches which you can eat
under an umbrella on the deck or beach-side bar, but thiere dinners are
pricey. But you would be at 1 Duval Street, within easy walking
distance of the Key West Bight and the Mallory Docks. Other people like
the Ocean Key, across the street at 0 Duval. They have a pool and I
have heard hot-tubs in the rooms. These would be my two choices if you
stay at a hotel.

If you go try not to miss El Meson de Pepe on Wall Street at night to
listen to their Cuban band. Their food is good but their drinks are
expensive. Try a mojito ($8.50). Also, for happy hour, go to Kellys' on
Whitehead Street. From 4 - 7 they serve the best 2.50 margueritas and
1.50 micro brews.

Other places not to miss; Blue Heaven on Petronia (they say Thomas, but
who you gonna believe?) two blocks off Duval. They have some of the
best food on the island. Try the blackened grouper. One more block
brings you to Santiago's Bodega for tapas and sangria (Order a pitcher
or you'll run out). B.O.'s Fishwagon on Caroline. Trust me, it's open.
Pepe's also on Caroline for home-made breakfasts. And any of the places
on the Bight - Half-Shell Raw bar or Turtle Kraals for shrimp and Key
West Sunset Lager.

And one other thing. Check out the Sebago Island T'ing for a fun day on
the water. Light breakfast, a snorkel trip, good lunch, a kayak trip,
and a few unanounced fun things. It's 10 - 4 and 79.00 / person, but
you can save money by booking on-line. And one other other thing. Catch
a sunset from the top of the La Concha Hotel, in the middle of Duval.
