My son emigrated with us in 2008 when he was only 16 he has spent a total of 600 days here and moved back to Uk.

His 136 visa expires in April 2013, he is wanting to come back to Oz in Feb 2013.
Just wanted to double check if he had to go back to Uk for after April 2013 for any reason, say in June for example for an emergency or whatever , he would have to apply for a RRV to return back to Oz.
Ok, would he then be able to apply in June for a 5 year RRV as has spent 2 years in Oz by June 2013 or would he only be eligible for a 1 year one as has spent less than 2 years in the initial 5 year period from visa grant?? Not sure which time period would be taken into account ? thanks in advance.

He would need an RRV (not sure if you are asking that though!) and for the 5 year one, DIAC would look at the time spent in Australia in the 5 years prior to the date on which he applied for his RRV. So depending on the exact dates, he may find that for every extra day in Australia, the same day (in Australia) 5 years earlier falls out of the calculation. It's probably a good idea to check the exact dates before planning his arrival date if he's likely to be borderline if there's no particular events he needs to work around, unless you took a while to move initially.
