Default I saw my first Moose...

.......5 seconds before it was hit by the car in front of me on a mountain pass. The Moose was still alive but well and truly ****ed up, as was the driver. His passenger wife was ok so that was lucky. Unfortunately we had to drive quite a ways to get phone signal and call 911. The moose had its head blown off by the local RCMP officer and the couple rushed to hospital. No idea if he survived but weirdly i feel more sad for the Moose. For shame.

Wow - thats a scary thing An EMS friend told me that the most injuries / deaths to people are caused not by the moose hitting the vehicle, but its flailing legs repeatedly kicking you due to it being stuck in your windshield.

We get lots of them out here, gangly looking swamp dankeys. Taste good though.

I've not seen a moose, but I have seen a few bears now.

With moose what kills you is the 300lb body coming down on your head. They are tall enough that the car will hit their legs, knock them up into the air and the body lands on top of you. At that point any thrashing of legs is a secondary concern I imagine.

There are lots of moose in this part of the world. And moose/vehicle accidents are often fatal to the driver of the vehicle. We've had close calls late at night with moose standing in the middle of the road or suddenly appearing from the undergrowth.

That being said, the first time I saw a moose was in a friends garden. Last year we had a calf wandering around our garden as well. See pic.

According to wikipedia an Elk is a Eurasian moose, so no it's not.

Probably Cervus canadensis, as opposed to Alces alces.

There are signs on Vancouver Island that say "Elk Crossing".

Yep, moose and Elk are (pretty much) the same thing to Europeans. North Americans use the world Elk for a variety of deer that isn't really a moose at all.

So, because I'm not from NA moose = elk.

My thoughts exactly!!!!!

And try telling fish and game that you shot an elk when you hold a moose tag, because techinically it's a Eurasian moose

Thats a pretty cool pic, wouldn't want to hit it with that car though (or with any vehicle I should add)

Yes, in fact it is a male Roosevelt Elk

A moose is the one with the weird-looking long face and the knobbly legs that look a lot too long and skinny for its body.
