I've gotten a few International upgrades with Qantas to Business... still not sure how and neither is my friend who works at Qantas (says its rare) but it happens to me at Check In... and usually the person Checking me in doesn't know either.

Twice my Mum has joked with Emirates at check in only for her to get to the gate and be given a business class upgrade.

Partner was flying Business with British Airways with a colleague (two of them flying for work so paid for by work), colleague got upgraded to First just because it was his birthday, my partner didn't, asked, they said no... but at the gate got upgraded to first class.

And once with Korean I asked how much for an upgrade and they did it for free (only half the leg).

Can't hurt to ask, sometimes they will charge, sometimes give you an odd look, sometimes a snotty response and sometimes an upgrade

Yeah we always ask, can't hurt! We've been upgraded on BA before, went to check-in for a New York flight at Gatwick and was told they were looking for volunteers to fly out on a later flight from Heathrow and they've give us £500 compensation (and take us to Heathrow), we said sure - but turned out they didn't need us to. So I joked that could we have a business upgrade to compensate us for the loss of the £500 I'd already been spending in my head (not thinking in a million years she'd say yes) but she did! Was very happy with that result
