Default shopping in Singapore, cheap?

We have a stop over for 2 days in Singapore and I was wondering how cheap things are, is there anything which I should look out for.

Mandy,

When do you go ?

We too are staying in Singapore for a few nights in August, any recommendations on hotels ?

Like Paylia I've heard made-to-measure clothes are extremely cheap and good quality. Many outlets to choose from.

We stayed in Royal Crown Plaza, very comfortable and very convenient - walk to Raffles and Orchard road where the main shops are, and close to their superb RTS Rapid Transit System

Thanks for that u lot, may just have to get a suite made then!!

Irishmolly,

We are staying at the Sheraton Tower hotel and we booked through www.hotelclub.net

It is supposed to be a five star hotel 1 double room SGD175.00 per night and a twin for the same price. I'm not sure how much that is in our money, will let you know. Both are with american breakfast.

We are paying £125 for a hotel at Heathrow for a family room (this includes breakfast but not for 1 teenager as she is nearly 18, so we had to pay seperate for her breakfast). That is only a holiday inn or something as well!

By the way try to get a hotel by Orchard Rd as this is where the action is supposed to be. I'll let you know what our hotel is like in 2 week time when we go.

Well, exchange rate at the mo is 3.1160 so SGD175 is about £56.

Good eh?

Mandy,

We're going to go through Singapore Airlines for the 'special stopover package'. I think we'll stay in the Hilton which is about £55 per night plus free tours, visits etc etc, but let me know how you do in the Sheraton and what Singapore in like generally.

Enjoy yourself ! and remember to post what the flight and stopover was like.

Happy flying

Michele.

When I lived in Singapore I got all hubbys shirts, suits, and my dresses and trousers made by Roy the tailor in Holland village shopping centre, he is on the 2nd floor (marked as 3rd fl!) . Big Sikh guy his wife runs the shop opposite him too. Everyone knows Roys!!
Hope you Enjoy it!

Cheap ? nothing is really cheap you get what you pay for. But as the exchange rate is good that will help.

I went back last November and headed for Lims in Holland village shopping centre and I usually took my visitors there, you have the Asian souvenirs, furniture, books, clothes, tailors, hairdressers and manicure-pedicures are very cheap!! . Orchard road has the standard designer shops, Little India has typical Indian products from clothes, silk, gold, spices. Food is cheap in Little India a Dosa for lunch will set you back SGd $2!

Holland Village is the area the expats go shopping and eat out.

Same for Malay village area and China town.

If you are after electrical stuff people will tell you to go to SimLim SQ But Parisilk in Holland Village behind the main shopping centre is honest and will always claim they equal any price you see. We've boughts lots of electrical goods there and its fine. But of course once you leave the counrty you can't take it back if it is faulty?!

time to go to bed must be up early!

hope these links help

It's actually called the MRT.......just so you don't get confused!!!!!

Shopping in Singapore can be cheap if you know where to go. If you don't you could end up with cheap tatty clothes, or out of date electrical goods sold as "the latest thing" or even worse that don't work. If you are only there for a couple of days I really wouldn't waste time shopping......see the sights (yes there are a few, but only a few!!!!)

We bought our laptop there in Feb. We paid about 700 pound I think for it. Hubby said it was a good buy. We could've got it cheaper in Kuala Lumpur but as we had heard Singapore was cheaper than KL we waited. A bit annoyed but we would have had to look after a laptop in backpacker hostels for a week on our way to Singers so maybe it was safer to buy it in Singers and haveit locked in the hotel room safe.

I always found Holland village to have inflated prices because of it's western expats - ie westerns tend to have more money than the local singporeans - so shop owners do tend to sell at inflated price in an expat hangout ( the only time I used to go there was to shop at cold storage once a week for groceries).. too many expats there for my liking .. just not my cup of tea.. I personally found the place too much of an ooh lah , pretend snobby society ( mind you they got great karaoke bar there with some private rooms - got p*ssed there once and sang my heart out to the dismay of everyone around me ..lol) , ever wonder why not many locals shop there? .. and lims if that's that big (bigish compared to most of the shops in there) shop when you go up the escalator which sells knicks and knacks from trinkety wooden items to lace little things - I can definitely say they are at inflated prices. for furniture it's cheaper to go to the big Chinese wooden factory just off the west coast road - he imports the good chinese wood furniture direct from china( forgot what it was called. they sell everything from the large heavily carved rosewood furniture items to the very small ( also large) cheap carved camphor boxes) - for trinkety things such as material made things it is much cheaper to buy upstairs at Mustafas . For a variety of knick knacks the shopping centre near china town is cheap, including tailors and shirt shops ( can't remember the name of the centre it's on the tip of my tongue) Sim lim - is the best for electrical items - but you do really need to know what your doing - shop around first (* which is going to take you more than a day if your say pricing Tv's or computers up etc) , get an idea of prices- then go to sim lim towers haggle and haggle - never pay a ticket price. I used to buy all my stuff from there, Tv's, computers etc, but I would say you really do need to know what your doing to get the lowest price.

I agree with the other person, if you are only there for a couple of days , I wouldn't bother trying to shop for bargains if you don't have an idea on prices. Buy a tourist book of Sing before you go to plan what you want to do , enjoy the sights, and pick up the usual knick knack things... and just enjoy yourself - shopping can be exhausting

cheers

don't shop ... just eat

but if you need to shop

Park Mall for furniture,
sim Lim for electrics (heed warning from Ceri. You need to know specifically what you want to buy).

More importantly - curry from singapore civil service club
Maxwell St food court one of my favourites for the more chinese fodder.
