Working at Tullamarine Airport - where to live?

Hi all,
Am new to this forum. My partner, my 2 year old son and I will be making the move to Melbourne towards the end of the month. I will be working at Tullamarine Airport and my partner will pick up some part time work to start with where she can.
Can anyone suggest some nice areas to live which are close(ish) to the airport. I don't mind a 20-30 drive. I will be on a scooter on my commute which should be handy.
Ideally we would like to be as near to the city as possible, but we don't want to be cramped into a snug townhouse without a backyard etc.
Some people have suggested Coburg/Pascoe Vale, but in our price range we are either going to get an older property or a new townhouse which I know is going to be cramped.
Also, areas with nice parks, daycares, transport to the CBD and shopping (supermarkets, general stores) close by would be ideal.
Thanks so much.

Hi, do you want to live in the city and commute out, or live in the countryside and commute in?
If the former Coburg and Pascoe Vale would be fine as would be Essendon. Greenvale is actually very nice in parts and there is a lot of new development but best to stay on the side of it away from Roxburgh Park.
If you are going to live in the country you could consider places like Mt Macedon - very beautiful and an OK commute to Tullamarine.

A scooter might be a challenge on the freeway.
Mount Macedon certainly is expensive but that is mostly because of all the multi-million dollar garden estates around the place, especially on the way up the mountain itself where it is all National Trust classified and many of the properties are owned by executives, corporations or celebrities.
It is a different story in the foothill areas though and around Macedon. Property prices here are the equivalent of your average house in a middle class suburb of Melbourne, generally 350,000$-500,000$.
Gisborne is another area where the house prices are pretty standard and it is about 10 minutes closer to Melbourne for commuting time. There is a huge boom in housing development in Gisborne currently, the place is growing like mad. A lot of new retail businesses opening up too including the ubiquitous McDonalds.
You definitely need a car though to commute from these places as it is freeway (motorway) driving all the way. Unless of course you use V/line train services which are excellent!
