You can hook up a PC or a laptop direct to your TV and use that.

I understand all of the VPN stuff/slingbox/streaming etc but is is possible to get this stuff on a TV instead of watching through my laptop? I hate watching stuff on a little screen when I've got a big TV right behind it. For some stuff I download it, put it on a pendrive and put that in my Xbox but I'm hoping theres a way to get other stuff on the TV. Stuff like lower league football that they don't show on Fox Soccer. Any suggestions?
I have a colleague who is developing an Android box that will connect to the cat5 one side and HDMI or RCA on the TV side - so it will be a simple low cost solution - its not available yet - so watch this space.

If he needs anyone to test it out for him, let me know.

Thats cool, but the box he is developing will do it all- network in, runs a VPN and the iPlayer app and outputs to the TV - so the PC can be turned off! Which is even cooler!

Media streaming player, of which there's a few, streaming that to your xbox which I presume is on your network, and then watch on the tele.

I use serviio, but it doesn't stream your desktop, which other media players can do, but you can get VLC to capture the desktop and create a stream, which you can get Serviio to pick up, to stream out to your xbox, if you wanted. That is pretty resource intensive though, so unless you've got a nifty laptop, it's best left for a desktop.

Thanks Bob, I'll look into some of that tomorrow.

While this thread is ongoing, I'm desperately trying to get SkyGo to work so I can watch the football on Saturday morning. I've never had it working but never really needed it as we're rarely on TV but we're on twice in the next 2 weeks.

I've got expat shield installed and a sky go account but whenever I try and watch anything it says "apologies, this item was interrupted due to an error. Please click play to resume watching. t2210-c1501"

Google hasn't helped and neither have the sky forums so hopefully someone on here can help. I've changed browser from firefox to IE to Chrome and still nothing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled expat shield several times but still nothing. What next?
Also, this week we've upped our internet connection by 5mbps to 18mbps and have a new router so I dont think its the connection but I could be wrong.

It's ex-pat shield.

It's either blocked by sky, or more likely it doesn't have the bandwidth you need.

You'll probably need to use a VPN that has better bandwidth, plenty out there that offer free trials which you can use to see if they will work. They should be around $5 or so a month.

I've a friend down in Phillie whos using expat shield with his Sky Go and it works fine. Whats more annoying is that he's useless with computers and it works for him whereas I know a bit about them and cant fathom it out.

Expat Shield is really hit or miss on the bandwidth front..sometimes it works like a treat, sometimes it's shit.

It was great during the 6 Nations rugby, but pretty dire during the world cup for me...also they randomly update the software but there's no way of knowing from within the player, nor their website what the new version is without downloading it and trying to install it.

There was a update a few weeks back at least too.

I've been having a play around again this evening but still couldnt get it to work. As part of my playing I removed the device from Sky Go and now it wont let me add my computer again for the rest of the month. I know thats only 2 days but the games tomorrow.

I think when I overcome that hurdle and I'm back from the UK I'll invest in a VPN.

There are loads of them. Personally, I couldn't comment on which is best, nor best value, but I'd recommend StrongVPN because they have been around for years, so are less likely to be a fly by night outfit to disappear with your money, especially if you were to consider a 12 month package to extra savings.

Because it has happened to a lot of other people using other VPN's....so unless you know they've been around a long time, it's probably safer to stick with a month by month fee, or a 3 month type subscription.

There have been loads of other VPN recommendations on BE in the past though and a lot of them seem pretty sound too.

Bob or anyone else for that matter... have any of you guys heard of the service provided by www.123uktv.com ?

I've put some feelers out on other threads to see if anyone knows much about them. To cut a long story short, they offer a combined UK VPN and Sky Go account access so you can watch sports and movies abroad. As F1 annoyingly went over to Sky this season, I'm pretty tempted as my freeview Slingbox seems a bit defunct now.

They just dropped their monthly price to a tenner so seems worth a punt but if anyone's used them, I'd be interested to hear what the service was like.

I don't know what they're like, but they're already being sued as far as I know, for the Sky thing, so they may or may not be around for long, so worth a punt, but I wouldn't go with a long subscription just in case
