Default Sugar And Why It Is Bad For You

I have been on a fitness drive lately thanks to the Myfitnesspal app/site that I have been banging on about elsewhere. Currently down 1.5kg with about 5 to go so something is working.

Anyway, I stumbled across this thing on sugar and how the body is affected by it. I'm going to watch the full length video later and thought you lot might be interested:

It's very well explained.

I don't know why it's still news to some folks. Many of us have known this for years.

You'd think people would also be aware of just how much sugar they down daily. My husband was drinking one of those iced coffees...I showed him, "Um, according to the label, there's 12.5 tsp of sugar in that bottle." And that was one serving. Imagine what some people go through in a day.

My concession is two in my tea but that's one cup a day, I'll be looking at the labels more closely now. I've always been mindful of calories/fat but not sugar for some reason.

Yeh, we all know it's bad but the vid explains quite nicely why, I thought anyway.

The others on that channel are also interesting.

I think that's where the wheels have fallen off for a whole lot of people. The low fat/added sugar movement hasn't reaped the rewards I think dietitians and governments hoped it would. But then we had people telling us why back in the 90s (and not just Atkins, but others).

I might check them out. I'm all for concepts being explained any multitude of ways that get the message across. We all learn differently, and whatever it takes to get it to sink in...Even then, we may know all the ins and outs, but living it daily is the trick, right? (speaking for myself). I've been reading on this topic for the past decade, and we eat healthy about 75% of the time (allowing for a hubby who would happily eat just meat and spuds the rest of his life and one kid whose fave food is sausage and bread, wholegrain at least). I restrict sugar intake at home, emphasize veggies, try to avoid processed foods. The most sugar this house saw was when my mother (diabetic but still die-hard junk food addict) came to visit and bought herself a basket full of fizzy drinks, Tim Tams, and chocolate from Coles just for her own consumption.

It's gotten tougher as the kids get older and ask for canteen meals (ugh, just sugar and refined everything), or the brands and convenience types of foods they see in their friends' lunch kits ("But Mum, all my friends have brownies for lunch").

It's shocking really when you start adding up how much sugar kids are consuming. I was looking at a yogurt label...supposed to be healthy, right...but it had almost 30g of sugar per serving. Almost 8 teaspoons. Add that to the juice, dried fruit, crackers, well...you get the idea. Even too much of the "healthy" stuff is not good.

It sure is an interesting subject, I thought I had a fair idea of what I was eating but I clearly was misguided. I went down the 'fat is bad' (eating it, that is) route to the exclusion of all other logic and can see now why I was feeling like crap and tired. Fat is needed for health. Not a mountain of it, obviously but it really shows that diet/low-fat/fat-free stuff up for what it is, a marketing ploy.

Our kid's lunch is generally fairly healthy but she really reacts to sugar (as most kids do) so it is a continuing battle to maintain a decent blood sugar level.

I'm going to read 'Good Calories, Bad Calories' now (prompted by the Underground Wellness site) and absorb some of that. Obviously no one theory is gospel but if it makes you think it's good.

My weekly weigh in today, I'm expecting results but if they aren't there then no worries because I feel better and the clothes are better fitting.

As I say, an interesting subject.

Interesting - thanks for posting.

Ive given up sugar, chocolate and junk food for lent and try to lose a few pounds. I dont drink pop or such things like that - but it was really difficult the first few weeks; however the healthy smoothie I make each morning seems to really help.

No worries, I've just watched the full length presentation, it's a really good eye-opener.

As a side-note today was my weigh-in day and I'm down another 1.3kg, I'm off for a coastal walk to celebrate

How much of the stuff were you eating before? Lots of straight sugar, as it were, or also lots of simple carbs?

I've been looking into the 'Paleo' way of life for the past week or so.............it's pretty much how I lost my 23kg, but with the exclusion of ALL grains and dairy....but it makes perfect sense when you read up on it. Low fat just produces heavier people.....it's all about the unrefined carbs.

I literally never drink soft drinks coke etc.

I cut out sugar from my tea about 5 years ago.

I'm amazed at the people who drink a sports drink etc with their lunch every day. Not only are they expensive but must have sugar in them?

I do eat pudding once or twice a week but I do train pretty hard too.

Makes you realise that if you really eat properly you CAN lose weight - and it's not just about watching calories. As a society we are in denial. I occasionally eat rubbish and I feel it the next day - I'm not sure how people can do this day in, day out. And when people buy their supermarket food they don't know what's it in either. I used to laugh at the people who cut dairy from their diet on a whim - (surely extreme) but now I am wondering if perhaps it's a good idea to cut more after all.

And yes, I know some people have dodgy glands...(etc).
