The only way to avoid any cruelty to animals is veganism. Animal products enter so many aspects of our food. The milk industry is cruel - as is wool (mule-sing)
Economics will always win out against the concerns of cruelty unless people hit where it hurts - stop consuming the product. At the end of the day not many people are willing to do that. Cruelty in farming is going to get worse as the population grows and demands a protein rich diet.

Mulesing - no anaesthesia? The RSPCA don't support that.

To add to the cruelty the proposal is to allow the calves who are only about 5 days old not to be fed for 30 hours before slaughter.
Many dont even have room to lie down, now starve them as well.
Thanks to those who took the time to sign it, if you havent yet it only takes a minute.

The thing is you can have your cake and eat it too. It has to do with the way the animals are treated like garbage not that they are or the product derived is consumed by people. I'm not convinced that humans are adapted to eat an exclusive veggie diet - not without consequences anyways but that's another debate. Unfortunately the decisions on how animals are treated is left in the hands of extremely callous and uncivilised people. Though if you suggested they run their favourite pet through a similar treatment you'd see a very different temperament manifest...
I was completely unaware that such practices were taking place. Just like free range eggs and meat I'll now be finding my milk at local farm markets were I can verify the treatment of the animals. I don't have a lot of money but I find deliberate cruelty unacceptable.
I once suggested to an avid sport fisher that I'd like to come over to his house and throw his dog a piece of meat on the end of a hook... And after I had dragged it around by it's face for 10 minutes or so I promised to be gentle and practice good catch and release technique... Can't understand why he wasn't amused...
