I'm 70 in a few days and much better off than some of my peers. Many if not most of them have had hip and knee replacements, pacemakers and bypasses. I've just got back from UK and I'm always amazed at how old some of them look. You know that old expression about policemen looking like schoolboys, well now when a Chief Inspector or similar comes on TV to make a statement they look like schoolboys as do most politicians. Generally there are many advantages in ageing, you have the money to do what you want within reason, if you don't want to go somewhere you don't have to make excuses, can just say don't want to and most people accept it. There is nature's aging process but the biggest influence is the individual, with a good outlook on life it is possible to carry on feeling young for quite a long time especially because you've realised how to look after yourself properly and the things that one should not do. Yes some people let themselves get old before their time, just think young and you will be.
my old man is 80 odd and could probably pass for 60 on a good day.
He cycles 30k odd k in a day several times a week and is remarkably fit. If he's not cyling, he's walking - literally all day in some cases.
He's only visited the doctor twice in 30 years. He just doesn't seem to get all those physical breakdowns or niggles that so many of his peers get.

When you no longer get wolf whistles from tradies, and your standard apparel is fleece and jeans. When you get jowls and can't call the laughter lines anything other than wrinkles. When people don't give you a second glance even when you dress up and put on makeup. When you no longer care about your appearance. When you have old people's illnesses like arthritis and cataracts.
Older women become invisible.
I'm going to be 51 on Friday and feel old, not middle aged.

in some ways men get favoured later on in those years. Maybe its an evener for the fact that women use their looks earlier on in the piece...

My wife takes the kids to the pool - they have a lesson - and she does 32 laps.
She's been swimming for about 6 weeks..started at 28 laps...I looked at her once and she looks good for someone who is not really a swimmer...
She's just off the phone to the local club - she wants them to critique her action...typical of an ex-dancer - can never settle for being average...

I swim, and could look as good as Carol if I had her money for surgery, collagen injections, clothes and hair & beauty treatments. I'm not overweight, just have a body that has aged- probably due to the MS.
I'm having a slightly depressed moment here, having been out to the shops to buy myself a top and teen daughter a bra- the top looked better on her, so she has it. I looked scrawny. She has perky c-cups and a waist. I'm flat. I hate those shop mirrors.

A good friend has a milestone birthday coming up and is wondering at what age is a person considered old?
This friend has resorted to wearing glasses when driving and deliberately describes themselves as "hip" to annoy their teenager.
This friend is, in all likelihood, approaching senility.
Now, in her dotage, the aged bat wants to know what are some of the other signs of old age to look out for?
