Deflect? The thread is entitled 'Dubai debt skips', that seems pretty clear.
Here are the facts. The law says that if someone bounces a cheque or does not pay a debt, they can be reported to the police. This can lead to arrest and imprisonment. What is not clear about that?
Certainly there are people here who appear to get around the law, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a law that applies to most people. You appear to be confusing fairness and legality. Let me remind you again, no poster here is saying that being sent to jail for debts is fair. If certain people are assuming that the law doesn't or shouldn't apply to them then they are really very stupid indeed.
There are loads of things about the UAE that are unfair, morally suspect or just downright wrong. I have never said this place is perfect, so I am simply reiterating the law. Not saying that I agree with it. There is a massive distinction.

we sure are flogging a dead horse- you are dead right to a point and I've never disagreed on what the law should be.... in black and white... but when precedent starts getting set by the law turning a blind eye to suit circumstance, then surely its not clear any longer is it- the application of the law is all a shade of grey, a condition of 'maturity' you seem to subscribe to in one of your earlier posts.
"The world is all in shades of grey, but it takes a degree of maturity to see that"
I never said the law was in shades of grey. An entirely different sentiment.

you're a funny one- 2 wrongs don't make a right, yet you're quite happy insulting and patronizing to the guy, post after post- you must feel like a part of the furniture over there in dubai- the city of shades of grey

It's one of the most fundamental differences between common law systems and civil law systems as here. It can be very uncomfortable for those from English speaking countries to accept, but the whole damn legal system here is rooted in circumstance.
If you don't understand or accept that, you'll very quickly get tripped up here.

but in dubai, the law is in shades of grey- proven in the way it's being applied on its inhabitants.

You understand that the whole concept of precedence is one that is very, very slight in most legal systems in the Gulf, right?

To all the skippys would let a friend borrow your car then **** off with it and never bring it back?
Or how about letting them come round empty your booze cabinet and take it all with them
Or perhaps borrow your laptop and never return it
Sure you could have them locked up for theft but gosh the laws unjust....

maybe you should re-read unhappyhere's post again, and get your moral compass back on track pal.
for the record meow is right- 2 wrongs don't make a right, but get real- theres a lot of criminality going on on his playing field which affects those whose rights have been shut down without latitude or mercy.

I'm back! Yes I was banned and told to cool off.
Interesting enough though, maybe someone is reading our posts! An editorial appeared in the National basically calling into question, effectiveness and fairness, of the debt laws in the UAE. I know that will make some of the people on here upset that the world is changing and it is no longer 1850 in the UAE. The good news is maybe some of those people will be on the chopping block as well! Other good news is that maybe the powers that be are going to help people out and that they are listening, albeit spying. lol.

Also Arabianbusiness.com had a number of articles about debt in the UAE listed today. Basically, 40% of people in the UAE are in debt. I would hope that they see this as a societal problem, and not an individual one.
A modern financial lending system needs modern financial laws and regulations, otherwise the two don't mix. Laws and regulations should benefit people not just companies. People should advocate for unfair laws and regulations they are living under, specifically when they think that it can improve society. Basically like what I did, not what Meow did.
Additionally, check out all the CEO's on arabian business that have been removed. Maybe things are changing for the better here? I hope so

"People should advocate for unfair laws and regulations they are living under, specifically when they think that it can improve society."
Did you really mean to say "FOR unfair laws and regulations"?
