Dogs Tickets booked.....finally, phew!!!
#16
Hi after months of quotes and phonecalls and e-mails finally the 3 Husketeers are booked on their flight to Calgary next May and paid for!

I can't say what a relief it is to have this out of the way, all I need to do is turn up at the airport at the set date and time lol, then check in for the same flight myself
For anyone interested, we have 3 Huskies that we are flying to Calgary. Their Rabies injections were inflicted last month and all that remains is their fit to fly certificate that our vet will perform 3-5 days before they are flying.
We had quotes from the following:
Airpets can't find this quote but I remember it was extortionate
Ladyhaye £2966
Transfur £3147.64
Skydogs £3414 ( This was for when we had 2 Huskies, we got the 3rd one later which is another story)
Skymaster Air Cargo £3200
James Cargo £3624.58
All these quotes are now out of date as the fares have gone up since we had them, the quote we settled on was
Animal Airlines £2784 as of yesterday's date
This is to fly Thomas Cook from Manchester to Calgary in wooden made kennels as were all the other quotes except Skydogs which was Air Canada from Heathrow to Calgary. Add to this my ticket for £208 to fly on the same flight and I am a happy bunny, wells as happy as you can get fro just spending £3000
I also looked into Air Canada do it yourself, only from Heathrow and they would only quote me for today which was £ £2794.34, this was with Vari kennels but having to get the 3 dogs to Heathrow put me off however if you live close to London its not a bad option.
The other good thing with Thomas Cook is they will honour yesterday's price when I booked it for next May whereas Air Canada would only quote 30 days before flight.
Apologies for the long winded post but just wanted to give others an idea of the difference in quotes, I will post again with news of the flight itself which I am dreading
If anyone has any questions about this post feel free to ask

They will be fine!!!! We had NO probs with Animal Airlines, even when we had to change her flight.

On another note who did you all insure your dog with for the flight?
I have had a look at a few websites for flying the dog over and they all mention a site called 'Pet Migration Insurance', but when I looked at the small print they do not insure the breed of my dog for some reason? She is a Northern Inuit and totally non agressive, she is very large about 40-45kg and the make up is German Sheppard, Husky and Malimute.

The thing is when we fly over for good we will not be a UK resident anymore so can't use our usual pet insurance that we have now as its not a holiday.
I was also going to look into possibly setting up pet insurance in Canada before we go and then maybe that would cover them for the flight over but I have not got that far yet to see if its possible?

Hi
I didn't insure at all, and all was fine. What would you be insuring against? I think the airline has their own insurance in case of plane crashes....so didn't bother. Much as you love your pets...they are replaceable for very little cost...the heartache will remain no matter how much potential pay out you could claim...so I feel it would be pointless. My dog was not insured in UK (due to veterinary incompetence...long story...not telling me what she had and then I changed insurance co...only to find out later that she had always had her problem....so was not covered. Vet told me one thing and wrote something different on claim forms which I did not even see)
I am sure your dog will be fine

Hi just had two quotes for my 3 huskies to Calgary, PetmigrationInsurance was £107.83
However found another site which is www.animaltravelinsurance.co.uk, they came in at £50.45 for the same quote, for the sake of £50 well worth it I think.
I know what you are saying Steff about the insurance being pointless and to a degree I agree with you but if ours were stolen or worse died during transit I'd like to know we would have the money to be able £750 each they aren't cheap.

Its not really about insuring against death just if they get an injury during the flight such as a broken leg whereby treatment could be quite costly, I am sure that would not happen but hey could be sods law if I don't insure.
Thanks all will take a look around at insurance options you have mentioned with regards to your huskys.

Or am I looking in the wrong place to get a quote?
Need to look into this further I think - still waiting on Visas and hopeing to leave end of summer next year

Just wanted to check out costings and to make sure everything is researched into.

Unless they simply need the UK address for sending the paper work to??
Will phone them to find out more just incase I am looking into this too deeply.
Thanks again for the replies everyone, and good luck with your journeys.

Although it's of no use to the OP as his dogs are too heavy, smaller dogs can travel as excess baggage on the same flight as the owner with Air Canada. As long as the dog and sky kennel (eg varikennel) are less than 32kg combined weight.
We did this with our 3 dogs back in June and the cost was under £140 per dog. This service is not available all year round but could be a cheaper option for some people.

with this option are they with you right up until you board, like when you take a childs pushchair, or do they have to go to cargo?
We would like to do this option but don't think he will be light enough, just need a really light kennel!!

In our case the dogs were with us until we checked in our baggage so probably up to about an hour and a half before the flight. At the other end they were there waiting for us when we came through immigration. Actually I went out of the immigration office to check on them before completing the immigration process.
And yes they do go in the hold. We actually saw them being loaded up the luggage conveyer while we were in the departure lounge! Really small dogs can go in the cabin I believe. Vari Kennels don't weigh much.

We took them with the baggage handlers down into the loading area where they did security checks on the crates then we put the dogs inside and they took them away for loading. We then had to run accross the terminal to the gate to board.
Dogs were sat by the baggage carrousel on arrival and were fine.
No probs at all and far cheaper

Thanks just need to find the lightest crate I can, any ideas? He weighs approx 24kg he could loose a couple but thats it! He is a small goldie so a large crate probably would be needed! Think its a long shot but any ideas of the lightest crate?
Thanks

I went to J humphries for mine...which was extra large...and cost £147 it weighed 11kg. see this link:
http://www.johnhumphris.com/products.asp?cat=47
A large kennel is just shy of 10kg....so your dog would be over weight for excess baggage....by the time you add in the weight of any bedding, toys and collar and leads. You need to measure your dog to ensure the right size of kennel....if you go to the company I have sent the link for with your measurements, they will tell you the size needed. Cargo prices are worked out on Dimensional Weight....so size and weight, but looks like cargo will be the route you will need to take. You can't rely on a weight loss regime for your pet. Unless they are overweight...then you should consult your vet.
Hope this helps
