What IT Qualifications do I need?

I didn´t find just submitting an EOI made one jot of difference to employers, most will want you to be an awful long way further down the route than that. Most job adverts and agencies will want to seriously talk only if you have a valid permit and some only if you are in NZ and able to face-to-face interview.

Good point - I think I have 120 points without the degree, so wouldn't make 140 with it anyway.
But do people usually get a job offer before submitting the EOI anyway (with a job offer I'd easily have enough points) ? Do NZ employers offer jobs to those who don't yet have a permit, but are virtually guaranteed to qualify for one if they have the job offer ?

I was advised by an Immigration agent that if i had over the minimum number of points to submit the EOI. Once i had obtained a job all i had to do was to revisit my online application and advise of a job offer and up go the points and you then get selected from the pool. For me i had about 110 points and was just sitting in the pool but i was here in NZ scouting for jobs and attending interviews face to face. After securing a job outside of Auckland my points ended up shooting to around 180. At the time of being offered the job i was only here on a visitors visa...

If you have no job offer then your EOI, even if selected, will take months as they prioritise those with job offers. If you have a job offer then it should take 2-3mths depending on complexities and any medical issues that need further time to rule out. Once you get a case officer that is a good 1st question

We submitted our EOI in July 2009, it got selected in September 2009 and we received PR in June 2010.

Just to add my 2p, I asked my mum to ask her IT people about what quals I would need to get work in IT related area and they said that they went more on experience than quals. I am a kiwi so don't need to worry about points, but I thought this was interesting. My dad says that in the private sector experience counts more, but whether this is the same for expats I don't know. On the basis of this I wouldn't let the lack of a qual deter you if you can get in without it. Of course jobs are tight there too and that is the opinion of just two people!!

Hi guys n gals, I'm looking for some advice on what I need in terms of qualifications for IT as a skilled migrant? I'm looking at the LTSSL and I appear to fit under ICT Professional umbrella.
I currently have various technical certifications, CISSP, Cisco etc. I have over 10years experience in networks, security and voip.
Are these likely to be enough or do I need a degree, something I dont have.

Without a degree you REALLY need a job offer in order to get enough points.

Just add my experience to the list.
Arrived in Auckland 19th December 2009 on a 1 year working holiday visa and started applying for jobs straight away. I wanted a perm job that would sponsor me for a work permit so didn't get too far to start with as all the jobs were contract. After 3 weeks went for an interview at a job I liked the sound of and who were OK with me being on a 1yr work permit, had a 20min interview, left thinking that was too short, but 15mins later got a call from the recruitment company saying I had got it and could start Monday!
Started next week, got my boss to fill out the employee part of the work permit which they did and applied for that. Took about 3 weeks i think for a 3yr work permit to come through (much quicker than I thought!)
So after that we started the PR process. All in all, from submitting EOI, receiving ITA and submitting took about 3 months and we now have PR!!
I had know how quick PR would take I would have done this to start with, but we were burnt by applying for an Australian PR visa back in 2008 which still hasn't been approved so didn't want to risk it.
Hope that helps. Timeline is in my sig as well.
