Default For those of you with attics (in Canada)

Go have a look, please, and tell what the insulation is. It will likely be fibreglass or mineral wool (pink, yellow or brown, either in mats or loose), polystyrene or loose stuff that looks like shredded paper (which it is and is usually grey).

My guess is that it will mostly be the shredded paper.

Nope...I got the 'off yellow' stuff (shades of NDP.... Yuk!)....hardly preferable to pink......or anything with even remote Liberal connotation's!

Shredded paper. It was flipping hot up there as well.

Any particular reason for this thread? Are you looking to reinsulate your roof space?

If I get enough responses, I might.

This is not a frivolous thread, BTW. I have a legitimate interest. I'm watching the progress of some European legislation/regulation that could have a big impact over here, if it crosses the pond.

As if you would be frivolous.

I don't know what we have up there but one house we looked at had granules that contained asbestos. We were told it would be ok as long as we didn't disturb it. The other house had some fluffy pink stuff.

Is that technical enough for ya?

A mixture
on the base some form of old yellow fibreglass, in the middle is a layer of old darkened pink fibreglass, and finished off with a think layer of blown in fibre glass
I'll be adding another 6" of new pink insulation just to bring it up to the current day's recomend level

The base layer in our house is wood shavings on top of that is a very thick layer of shredded paper and in one corner there are R-40 batts of pink fiberglass.

I put the fiberglass in.

I didn`t mean to suggest it was. I was just curious as to why you wanted to know this.

Or to even contemplate the possibility of re-selling...........

Most likely some cancer causing chemical was used in the fire retardant that was used to treat the paper.

I reckon that if all the truck drivers on here posted what was really in their attics, the coppers could probably close out most of their missing persons lists.
