ive been sampling a few US beers and find many of the microbrews really too bitter or headache inducingor just plain too much alcohol, ive been looking for something a bit easier going. So far a quick list of ones i like:
pretty much anything by new glarus in wisconsin (and unfortunately almost exclusive to wisconsin due to weird selling practices) , their spotted cow is perhaps too easy to drink but i still enjoy it. organic revolution, and hearty hop are nice too. Boulder 'cold hop' a nice Uk style pale ale with an unfortunate looking label, just doesnt give the right vibe to the drink. last years sierra nevada anniversary ale (all gone now) . currently i really like harpoon IPA from boston, this is one of the few US beers that could easily be a UK pint, quite sweet and hoppy (actually quite low hoppy!) together, they serve it on tap in a local irish bar. Western New Yorker here... Here's my preferences:
1) Yuengling (Pa.) 2) Saranac (NY) 3) Sam Adams (Mass) Just don't go near Koch's Golden Anniversary Beer... Because it's shite, but thankfully you can't get it outside of West New York. |

I know what you are talking about with the alcohol level. There's a ton of US beers I love but there are not many good tasty beers with less than 5% alcohol. It seems to be a general rule here that the beer has to be strong to have flavour. Sometimes you just want something easy going but tasty.

Yeungling and Blue Moon, definitely. Deeper taste than the other lagers.
Yeungling black and tan is pretty good, too. |

Rather like the selection at Trader Joes, there's a Glissen (sp?) from San Fran that is rather good.
Kennebunkport does a nice and also cheap IPA Dead Toad? Is a good ale Sam Adams is alright, nothing special, good place to visit and they do some nice seasonals though. Quite a few good breweries in VT and ME, Gritty's especially.

all these mentioned here are not too bad, but they all share the same problem. Too damn fizzy.

I don't know if you can get this beer outside of Washington state, but my favorite beer is called Manny's, brewed by Georgetown Brewery in Seattle. It is so good, you can only get it on tap though.
