Also, if you stay through the monsoon, it is quite noticeable how they all come flooding in at once in preparation for the new season. Its as if there is a set day for them to arrive and start work, warming up for the arrival of the foreigners!

I can't think of much an 'even not very good Catholic' would not do whether it be against the 10 Commandments, Papal edict, or the commandment of any of the heirarchy of piety.

Religion in all cultures is shaped to accomadate life's actuality, whether by the power structure of Church and State or at the level of the humble 'believer'. Expediency, in most eventualities overrides belief, and even fear of retribution.

'Faith' is something which derives from self consciousness; an inconsolable need (perhaps a genetic disposition) amongst human beings to believe in supernatural beings.

Not going into a religious debate here. You were joking, weren't you?

I know you're certainly clued up enough to have witnessed the co celebration of festivities and religious observations/ritual amongst the Catholics and Hindus of Goa.
you're right, I was being partly sarcastic - the Roman Church does have its own take on graven images after all <s>, but also partly serious in that I really don't think a Goan Catholic would use Hindu paraphenalia for begging purposes.
