Hi......
This question has probably been asked 100's of times but I just want to put down my situation and get some help from that! I currently am 23 and live in a small town in the North East of England. I am employed full time @ Infoserve/ Yahoo Local. I am a Media Sales Executive selling small to medium sized businesses advertising on the internet. I currently live @ home with my parent so no house to sell etc. I am wanting to move to Dubai asap but dont know where to start! I want to rent an apartment..hopefully a 2 bedroom as I have a 5 year old son who I will be coming with me. What can I expect to pay a month? I have heard people mention that employers sometimes contribute. Is that correct? I want to do a similar job over there but also dont know where to start. Would it be a good idea to register with a recruitment agency? Or to try and find a job on my own? Obviously I will be bringing my son so how does the schooling system work? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance |

I know....
Where does one begin? Shall I start? Ok. Dear newcomer: There are several things you should know about Dubai: 1. The economy is lousy. 2. Rent for a two-bedroom flat start at approximately 75,000 AED/year. That works out to a thousand pounds a month. Rent will be paid quarterly, on average. Plus you have utilities and maintenance fees on top of that. 3. The economy is lousy. 4. School fees: expect 30,000 AED/year for your child at his age. 5,000 pounds. Not bad, really, but the fees escalate as he ages and reach around 65,000 to 80,000/year for the last few years. 5. The economy is lousy. 6. Your job sounds like it can be done by an Indian or Pakistani expat making 5,000 AED a month. Or 10,000 pounds a year. School fees and housing allowance will NOT be included as part of the poor man's package. 7. The economy is lousy. 8. Even if a company was willing to hire you on a viable salary, you, as a single unmarried mother with a child (presumably) out of wedlock, will not be able to sponsor your child to come to Dubai with you. In theory the child could do visa runs and remain a permanent 'tourist,' as some people here do, but without that visa he will not be able to enrol in school. Nor would the company be able to provide school fees if they wanted to. 9. The economy is lousy. Anything else? Oh, and yes, the economy is lousy. Make that very, very lousy. |

Welcome to BE
![]() Read the forum, realise it's a daft idea, no economy in it especially when you have a job already and a kid to put through school etc. Go for a holiday, enjoy it and move on. The EU is a big place, don't have to worry about a visa, so much better options for you anyway.

Abso, and your kid is just at the right age to go to i.e. local Spanish,Greek or French schools which means no fees. The UAE is a very male dominated society and women aren't always allowed to sponsor their kids-maybe if you were a Doctor,Teacher or Engineer with a monthly income of @ 5-10k(it's just changed I can't remember the criteria but within those parameters) then you might have a chance- though I think there is a preferred age also,25 I think- all this provided the father of your child signs a letter of no objection to you taking the child abroad of course.Even if he ain't in the kid's life much, unless you say he's deceased you will need a letter of no objection which needs proper notorization. You seem to have a fall back position of support at your parents;what would you do out in the ME with no family if you took ill or the wee guy was ill and you had to work? You may have heard of many families having maids etc but you need to sponsor anyone you employ and the process of sponsoring a maid is @ 7k plus medical fees and then of course salary....... Really, if you want to make a life for you and yr son o.s. the UK,try Europe first. You have some legal protection,no discrimination re single status, E 1-11 health cover at least, free education if child at appropriate age for National schools i.e learning in country's language which they say foreign kids of 5 are perfectly able to cope with. Also your parents would only be a couple of hours away should you need their help/support.Good luck with whatever you decide but I'd forget Dubai for the moment. |

There are a lot of British expats that have been doing media sales here, particularly for a couple of magazine groups. However as 'the economy is lousy' a lot of these people with exceptional UK experience with top line publications have found themselves out of a job as advertising spend here has effectively fell through the floor over the last year. Another issue, if you were fortunate enough to get through your child visa issue and get a job, would be getting paid. Some companies have been so cash strapped that people have been waiting for salaries, or been paid 2-3 months behind. This is not the UK and employee rights fall far far behind those of what you would be used to. I appreciate that the UK is on its arse, but unless you have an exceptional proven track record in media, as well as significant contacts here that could bring in significant spend over and above the average, now is not the time to consider the UAE. Anyway, a move right now would surely jeopardise your entry into Miss England 2010? |
