The container method is cheapest and we are paying £2000 for a 40ft container. This will included all transfer documentation etc for both cars and then we have $662 per car when we get there to clear customs and we are sorted!!! If you have owned the car for less than a year it becomes more expensive as there are 12.5% costs from the purchase prise you paid to pay as well (less some depreciation costs on a sliding scale within the 1 year ownership) to add. We have had ours for 4 years so there are no taxes to pay on entry at all. I looked on autotraders NZ for comparison costs to replace the cars and we are still quids in by over £1500. To be honest I don't think it is that much hassle to do but you must remember to take purchase invoice, registration and MOT so you prove your purchase date etc and current insurance (so you can still show no claims for insurance). Hiring a car out there for a few weeks while the container arrives is fairly cheap and we have taken that into account too!!!!
I wouldn't do it if the car wasn't japanese or local make due to repair costs or if we were looking to resell within 5 years as they then claw the tax from you.

Hi Viv - your container price seems really cheap - who have you got it through?

We worked out having looked at comparison sites like autotraders in UK and NZ...at the current excahnge rate we were quids in to ship out as their equivalent car was much more. We are using RJJ to ship the cars out.
Quotes were:
From- Southampton To- Auckland (by 20ft container)
Inclusive Shipping Rate GBP 1250.00 ....for one car and....
Rate for 2 x vehicles by 40ft container-
From- Southampton To- Auckland
Shipping Rate GBP 2250.00
This includes
* Origin Handling
* Loading and securing
* Export Clearance
* Shipping Docs
* Bills of Lading
* Freight Charges

Hope that helps as it was the cheapest I found after loads of searching and they have been very helpful sorting out any charges there may be the other end with a NZ chap from the company emailing me regulary so I know what to expect!

P.S. sorry forgot...
There was a company (Excess International movers) we haven't used who did seem fine that quoted £1,019.00 for one car in a shared container. It would possibly take two weeks longer as a shared contaoner than if we had sole use as with the quote above, but that is usual practise I understand.

"Cars here although left hand drive have opposite controls to the UK, I'm still doing the wipers in order to indicate!"

Only true 'cos they're Japanese. Its true of all Japanese cars wherever in the world that they are sold.

Thought seriously about bringing the Motorbikes over but the one big stopper for me was the salt roads that the bikes have already been subject to.

Cheers for this info Viv - now a definite contender - especially as can apparently pack things into the car. Thinking of all the things we'll need straight away before the rest of our stuff appears!
