They probably pay the police....

Agree that the tour reps should warn people but they are probably too busy concentrating on their commission by selling overpriced dolphin trips or some such

They get nothing outta me...

Hi Dreadsoc,

Yes they are probably giving the police big bungs because they can't fail to see them begging. The cops are sometimes hitching a ride on the coastguard's red jeep so they must see these two several times a day if not more.

Hi Sunglow

The old bill in Goa can't seem to see anything if it's larger in size than a 100 rupee note !!

They go outside the chemists in Calangute High Street? He has a long stick to pretend to support himself but he manages to walk the entire lengh of the beach from Candolim to Baga in a day! This guy and the India middle aged women cover some ground despite his disability (that's if he actually has one.) This plaster cast has brown leather strap on the back which most likely he takes off. It appears he still has his leg under it.

Another one who the police should get a grip of.

The tweeters are taken in and I have seen them give them money. I feel like telling that this couple are a f*****g big con, but what can you do? This couple have been at it for at least ten years now. Surely the police must see them. Why do they allow them to continue and turn a Nelson's eye? Really speaking the tour operators should inform the tweekers about these scumbags who are posing to be poor when they are anything but.

Sunglow.
years ago saw a documentary showing some of the con artists packing up at end of day, taking a taxi home to a decent fully equipped flat with all the latest gizmos. Hang about the Taj hotel in Mumbai past midnight and you may glimpse a couple of chauffeur driven cars taking the scumbags back to their servant prepared meals. Another documentary last year showed that the slums in Bombay are a huge corporate entity unto themselves, except everything is free: they siphon water, electricity off the 'modern' living areas around them, plus internet and cable connections which they use to establish overseas connections for import/export!!!! I noticed at the Calangute Tinto, that ALL the beggars have the latest cellphones, which they use to effectively canvass newbies right from the bus stand up to the beaches of Calangute n Baga!!!! At the moment, no one is living in my property, but phone and electricity bills have been humungous for the past 6 months!!!!!!

Hi Dread,

The Old Bill need to be retrained and given a total make over to fit in with the modern times of Goa/India.

More high profile and better educated staff are required in posts.

The 100 rupee bung, well what can one say?

Likewise, went out of State for a month earlier this year, took electricity reading before departure and came back to find approx 700 units had been used while away.

Didn't have time to take it up with the line man, but someone had definitely hijacked the supply.

One of the many wonders of Goa.

re: electricity - always keep your bills and make sure the 'previous' on the new bill matches the total on the old bill. Absolutely amazing how often accidental transcription errors happen! Also check the 'current' reading against your meter.

True, but it's not the shopkeepers fault either - see below.
re: beggars:
was in the veg cafe just past the court in Mapusa today. The boss bought change off the local beggar. Saw the same beggar later who said something like "Ah! coffee shop" so I gave him Rs. 3 and got a nice Namaste - quite like the old days, and very different to the old bag who cursed me all along 18th June Road yesterday!

What about the old woman with the wooden temple on her head, usually near Rockie's, Calangute; sometimes Anjuna market, but in a sari.

She's just an ordinary Goan granny (probably a Catholic!), but as soon as a pack of tourists approach she quickly gets that Hindu temple on her head, must be about the size of herself.

Have even seen the nearby taxi drivers in on it. They very obviously give her large denomination notes (100 rs) - which they get back later - then badger the unsuspecting tourist's into buying some good luck.

Hi,

She is most likely a very well off Goan Granny at that!

One afternoon when having a coffee in a certain public bar on Calengute High Street this granny came begging outside the bar. There was a British man sat on the next table to me who was very drunk. I could not believe my eyes when he gave her 500 rupees and told her to go and get something to eat.

These people know where they can take advantage and know who are an easy touch.

The tour Operators should advise tourists that most of these beggars are not in need and they are not what they appear to be.

Message to any tweekers, BEGGING IS BIG BUSINESS IN GOA. Do not let them take you for a ride!

Have noticed that these two, "Old dirty pot leg and his dirty female sidekick" never go begging to their own Indian/Goan people when going along the beach begging. They only approach the whites.

sorry, but that is not credible - even a not-very-good Catholic would know it's against the 10 Commandments to worship graven images.
Let's not go too far in this hate-fest!

I take it you're being heavily sarcastic, though I sense not???

I can't think of much an 'even not very good Catholic' would not do whether it be against the 10 Commandments, Papal edict, or the commandment of any of the heirarchy of piety.

Religion in all cultures is shaped to accomadate life's actuality, whether by the power structure of Church and State or at the level of the humble 'believer'. Expediency, in most eventualities overrides belief, and even fear of retribution.

'Faith' is something which derives from self consciousness; an inconsolable need (perhaps a genetic disposition) amongst human beings to believe in supernatural beings.

Not going into a religious debate here. You were joking, weren't you?

I know you're certainly clued up enough to have witnessed the co celebration of festivities and religious observations/ritual amongst the Catholics and Hindus of Goa.

you really should get a Goan you know is Goan to ask the 'Goan granny' if she is Goan, or verify her 'provenance'. FNs are being led by the nose in perceptions...the shyster beggars are ALL out of staters, and so are many taxi drivers and shack owners. Beware in passing judgement

Nothing worse than an out of station taxi driver, especially at the airport, who does not know the way and you have to direct him to Candolim or Calengute.

Hi,

Thought ALL taxi drivers have to be Goan to obtain their licence. Forgive me if I am wrong.

I know some beggars are for real and do need to beg to live, especially if they cannot work due to a disability. I feel sorry for these people. But when you see the same known beggars who are pretending to have a disability year after year such as that of "old pot leg" who can walk well and at speed for miles and miles in the hot sun, well it goes to show that he and his female sidekick are taking the p*** out of the tourists. The Goan Granny is also taking the p*** too as she has been seen in other areas well dressed.
