v 3.5.3 doesn't seem to me to have nearly as many crashes as .5.2, although I had one shortly after overinstalling it. Perhaps.........

I'm still using 3.0.195.21

I don't upgrade until the version I'm changing to has been replaced. I very rarely ever have any issues with upgrading that way.

Trouble with that is that I suppose any critical security fixes are applied only when one upgrades?

No! 3.0.X still has all the necessary security patches. And is perfectly stable as a bonus. In fact, the only negative to sticking with it at the moment is that it takes a bloody long time to load!

I didn't know that - I had always assumed that once a release had been issued for an upgrade, the previous releases were "unsupported" - ie., not patched with any subsequent security fixes.

Firefox 3.0.x will be maintained with security and stability updates until January 2010.

Are you running XP or Vista? Press Ctrl,Alt + Delete at the same time to open Task manager to see what processes are running.

One of the forums I sometimes look through suggests that it may be a virus.

I'm currently messing about with the latest "Minefield" version of Firefox (3.7). So far so good....in Windows 7, it displays the tabs when you hover over the taskbar icon, just like IE8.

With a couple of addins such as ietab for tricky pages, I think I might slowly be starting to prefer Firefox over IE....
