Hi there, I am a notts lad in roscommon and galways is nice reminds me gloucester for some reason but on a smaller scale, shud be lots of bitty office jobs there its lively enough but be away that ireland is now officially in recession so there are plenty of public sector cutbacks, property market is shite, but rentals u shud be ok as a landlord wud take ur right arm to let to you, there are loads of brits in the west so if you ever feel homesick i know loads that will cheer u up........no snow here at all around crimbo, unless you live on a hill.
any teaching job you dont need to speak irish....used to be the case but not now..just network when u get here shudnt be too hard.

I'm sure it is. Anwyay, are you off to sunnier climes? Good luck to you if you are. I lived in southern Italy for a time, beatiful country, gorgeous food, really nice life style. I thought about moving to Spain but the oldies are in Kerry and it feels right to be nearer them.
Good luck!

Hi blueeyes, did you manage to move there yet?
I'm moving over from Australia to Ireland around July??ish (hopefully for my 50th b'day (feel ancient, but I'm very young at heart
) in Ireland (family from the North, my first time visit and decided to just 'do it' and move there!)
I'm writing my first novel, and heard lots about Galway with people artistic/creative likeminded people there??? Gulfstream, you sound like I could benefit having a chat with all of your seemingly wealth of knowledge!
You actually caught my attention when you said 'if you are religious etc' be prepared to tell the locals your life story!
really???
If you've moved there blueeyes, did you find accommodation relatively easy? And was transport able to be found within a stone's throw if you did?
I've also 'heard' the cars are expensive over 'home' (as the family call it)??
As soon as my house is sold, I'm outta here!

its blueeyes here. Have you made the move yet? I popped over a couple of weeks ago to sign up with agencies and have a look around. I haven't found a job yet, so might have to re-think my plans. Let me know how you get on.

Hi Blue-eyes, job wise its very quiet in Galway at the moment because of the crunch, depends on what you do?
Dublin/Limerick / Cork there is still lots of work but Galway has crashed unless you work a checkout Till (Aldi and LIDL are both hiring at over the Legal wage)
In town Rents are obviously higher than "Country" but I live a 5 minute walk from a every hour Bus Stop (last bus at 1930) and there are brand new fully furnished Houses at between €800-1000 a month all over about 40 minutes from Galway Centre.

Yes, I live just outside Galway.depending on what you do for a living, Hotel staff, cashiers at the tills at €9.00 plus per hour as long as you can speak and read English etc...
But then I worked my way through Varsity just after the last ice age,I've been a waiter, barman,Ambulance driver, Strawberry picker,Grape Crusher etc.. wanted to be a gigolo but was too ugly.
It all paid the rent, fed me and gave me memories.
