Ha ha !!!!!!!!!!!! Got this reply today from the Council !!!!!!!!
Ms Hanson,
Congratulations on the passion you are showing on this issue. Well done for raising it with Mr Rudd.
I would be keen to hear a list of points you would like to see done at the shelter and through Council to make a difference on the ground.
EG
1) Free neutering program
2) Compulsary microchipping??
etc
It might be a mixture of things you have seen in the UK and here.
I am not sure if you are aware but there will be a local government election in March for the amalgamated Townsville and Thuringowa Councils. This provides a unique opportunity to start afresh in areas like animal management.I will again be contesting for a position as Councillor and I am running with Thuringowa Mayor Les Tyrell. Your suggestions could help Team Tyrell formulate a sound animal management policy.
Thanks for your passion and time.
Regards
David Crisafulli

What I don't understand is the attitude that if you can't pay your pet is destroyed weather it's your fault the animal escaped or a tree falls in a storm or a malicious neighbour takes your dog to the pound. Yet again the work shy drop out's are exempt from these fees with anyone working footing a bigger bill:curse:
And who left the gate open? I would've made those JW's pay up!Christmas Spirit eh? $150 smackeroos less $30 for putting it down...$120 straight into the back pocket

I will not enter a Pet Shop for that reason

Thank you for raising awareness of this sad and unacceptable situation, please keep us informed of your progress

Hey alliekate.
Please do send me any e-mail addresses you have, and I'll forward my letter on.
Cresta57's story is a prime example of one major thing wrong with the system.
Although I am completely against it, I find it a little ironic that some people can get so upset at the thought of 50 Humpback Whales being killed, and yet don't raise an eyebrow when that many dogs are destroyed everyday in their local area. I guess Whales are a bit more "glam" because you can't buy one locally.....

I stopped watching the RSPCA program on the TV here when it became apparent that they didn't take unwanted animals to shelters but to be put down. Wild animals too. And then they have adverts on TV about how wildlife needs to be protected
I'm not one to be that active but I support the UK and Aussie RSPCA online campaigns when all you have to do is add your name to a web petition or write a quick email.
I fully endorse your sentiments. Why not compose a more generic email that BE animal lovers can forward to local councils & local RSPCA contacts etc?

There are two sides to every story, here's another view:
On the Friday before Christmas we had Jehovah's Witness people in our area canvassing for support for their particular religious club. They visited the houses in groups of 2-3 as per the norm. When they got to my mates house they left the gate open while they wandered down the 500m driveway. Both his dogs were having a run in the yard, it's fully fenced with a large sign on the gate asking to keep it closed.
As a result of their unwanted visit both dogs escaped to explore the neighborhood. Both were spotted within mins by a bloke who works for the local council. The upshot was they were loaded into an estate car, collars removed, deliberately kept until the pound was closed then tied up outside of it until next morning. [We know this because it's happened to several other dog owners in the area & the same distinctive rope is used to tether them "out of hours" to the pound gates]
My mate rang the two local council pounds within an hour of the dogs disappearing & continued to ring hourly until close of business. Next morning he rang again to be told they were found tied up outside of the pound at 5am that morning. He went down to collect them and was informed that he'd have to pay $150 to reclaim the dog, when he said he'd come for the two that were found tied up that morning the figure became $300.
The sad thing is that with only a couple of days before Christmas & with my mate being a low income earner he simply didn't have $300 laying around. He pleaded but they wouldn't budge so he had to make a choice which dog would he pay for and which one would be destroyed. He then had to explain to his kids why they could only have the one dog back.
That may explain why so many dogs are kept tethered in yards. It may also explain why the pounds are so full. It goes a long way to explaining why so many end up in the pound after storms bring fences down.
I realise that the animals need to be fed & staff need to be paid. What I don't understand is the attitude that if you can't pay your pet is destroyed weather it's your fault the animal escaped or a tree falls in a storm or a malicious neighbour takes your dog to the pound. Kateallie and Anawana??? Well done to you two for bringing up this terrible state of affairs and doing something about it. Let's hope more people do. I'm printing this out to pass around and make more people aware. I had no idea!

Hi everyone, thanks for your support again.
That shelter sounds like it sucks, and my heart does out to your mate. God it probably costs them more in drugs and body disposal than to just hand the poor thing back.
Jason and I think you should make those religious guys know what happened and make them pay. And then stop bloody bothering people - mind you when we get Sophie here they will not get in the front yard, a true terrier. Not unless they want their suits ripped to shreds.
Please give me time, and I will list all the email addresses I have - can you pm me your email address and I will and send them on to you - we are talking about 50, so it might be easier.
Much love a

I will not give up.

I've been reading through the posts and it makes me feel sort of.. proud to be human, when people are as passionate about something as you are, alliekate.
I'm moving to Brisbane in about two weeks to be with my mum, and she got her Alaskan malamoot (is that the spelling?) and her Maltese Shitzu (again with the spelling!), who, incidentally, is 14 months old and has been painted purple by the last lot of kids who used to own him, from the RSPCA shelter near her. I can't remember the name, but it must be the one closest to Burpengary.
All I know about the situation at the moment are the little hotch - potch bits of information that my mum gives me, but she made it sound pretty dire anyway.
Good luck, I'll be doing my bit when I'm down there! =)

You may like to recall that there are also Australians at this site. Many of us are even responsible pet owners. Idiots who don't deserve pets are everywhere, it's not an Australian thing.

No offence meant, I mean this most sincerely.
I know there are many many Ozzie animals lovers here, and that you are one of them.
I apologise if I have insulted you, or any fellow Ozzie animal lovers.
Lets just fight this cause together, Pommie or Ozzie, for the animals sake.
With much love, Alliekate. Forgive me.
ps I was an Inspector in the UK for 10 years, but the situation was not as bad as it is here.

Please can you close this thread as I will not be back. I have lost my son, and support would not have gone a miss.
Thankyou and goodbye
