Wow! Thanks for the link. I think I'm convinced that the "Fat Burning Zone" isn't entirely correct.
It sort of ties in with what I tried to say in my original reply - if you don't break a sweat, you really can't expect to lose weight. All these people I see doing long, gentle walks either in the park or at the gym on a treadmill really aren't achieving anything much.
Longy, thanks for giving me an excuse to thrash it at 80% of my max. heart rate today at the gym

The guy explains how working off max heart rate isn't necessarily the best way of working out - he bases everything around your lactate threshold.
Don't be scared by the fact the guy writes books for pro tri-athletes. Its actually quite easy to get into.

If you really want to make the most of your HRM this is a good book. Especially if you want to improve what you can currently achieve.

I hope there's not a heart rate that makes me lactate!
(thanks for the link though)

I've had some great karma and PMs about motivating others to get fit and lose weight, so here are a couple of points I missed out of my story.
I know that to some of you (most of you?) I probably sound like a total bore - a health freak. But hey, one or two of you might be inspired to NOT join the swelling ranks of America's obesity epidemic.

...........and if you are in the slightly older age group (like me
) please talk to your doctor first before you start any type pf exercise programe at a Gym..

Another issue that women in particular have is that severe caloric reduction can just send your metabolism into a slump. That's the slump I'm trying to climb out of -- my body thinks I'm being starved, so it makes me sluggish in an attempt to conserve calories to keep on having babies....

Its only a rough figure, but its a lot more accurate then what the heart rate monitors use - which is your maxium heart rate - normally based on 220 minus your age - this is unliklely to be accurate for your max heart rate, and to work out your max heart rate is even harder then finding out your lactate threshold.
Anyway this is not to say the standard setup of a HRM won't work. They can be great tools for motivating you.

He suggests several methods for working out what this is in the book. If I recall it does require pushing yourself pretty hard for half an hour, and then using your average heart rate over the last 20 minutes. Something along them lines. He then has tables for what each zone is based on this, for each activity.

How does one figure one's lactate threshold? lactic acid in muscles-> pain, but ....

Lastly, find a gym you actually like. With stuff to do that isn't just mindless workouts. Our gym ritual includes the steam room or sauna every time, plus a long shower, and that makes it infinitely more enjoyable than leaving the gym in your sweaty gym kit .

A cab would work, but alternatively if you don't mind a little bit of walking you can get the metro, probably best to get out at Smithsonian on the blue/orange line - from the airport take the Yellow line to L'Enfant Plaza and change.
I would then suggest going back to Smithsonian and getting the blue line to Arlington and that line will take you back to the airport as well. Alternatively you can walk from the Lincoln, its not that far, but its blimin cold at the moment so probably best to get the subway.

So the only option is to stop buying crap that'll make you fat. No more KitKats, and no more "pie on the counter".
Stock up with real low calorie snacks. Rice cakes (there are some great flavored ones now), low calorie crackers, crisp breads, some low fat spreads to go on them (Marmite's great!), baby carrots and other veg that can be snacked on, popcorn... anything, really, that's genuinely low calorie and low fat.

Clearly you have zero self control. I'm not judging - neither do I. If there's chocolate or icecream in the house, I'll eat it, diet or not.

My problem is I hate exercising...I particularly hate getting all wet and sweaty. I have a good range of fitness equipment at home...but use it in fits and starts.
