Hi all,
Am in the process of applying for a student visa - course starts in Feb '08 - and I'm aware that I will be able to work 20 hours per week during the course and unlimited hours during holidays, but, if we get over to Aus in the next couple of months am I allowed to work before the start of the course ?
Does anyone know ?
Thanks.

Hi,
We are also going on a student visa for Feb 08 and I believe you can. I think you need to obtain permission to work, which you can do almost immediately once you arrive in Oz, I believe it's around $60 each to apply.
Cheers
Russell

Excellent news.
Thanks Russell.
Just had a look at the immi.gov site and it appears to confirm this.
Where are you headed ? We're off to Perth.

Hi guys,
You need to start your course before you can apply for permission to work. Its a 157p form and you need a letter from your college to state that you have started the course. As to ways and means around this, I'm not sure, but you can check it out on.

That's a shame mandy, but thanks for clarifying. It doesn't really make much sense, except another restrictions for those applying under a student visa..
If anyone knows away around this, I would also like to know.
We are off to Melbourne, after visa lodged, planning to book the flights for beginning of Jan...
Regards
Russ

Oh sh*t, yeah - the flights cost more in December, don't they ?
BTW Is that right that on a student visa you can only take one suitcase per person ? Or is that an urban myth ?

Flights start to go up from bout the 30th Nov and get really high round bout 8th Dec. Also from the 14th its peak season for holiday rentals and hotels n stuff. The only thing I know in regards to luggage is that we may not be able to get double allowance as this is just usually given for PR. I was just going to e-mail when I'm looking to book to see if they will allow any extra weight.
