Default Edinburgh festival

Can anyone tell me their experiences about the Edinburgh festival? Is it true that Americans get robbed like the scene in Trainspotting? Is it a good scene if you like a laugh and a few beers?

I don't remember that, but an American also got robbed in the same author's recent
book "Glue" so that may just be Welsh's hang-up! Crime against tourists in Edinburgh
is very low- the centre of the city is very safe indeed- though as with most UK
cities, you might want to steer clear of pubs and clubs at closing time. (*) Lots of
drunk youths on the street, and so on- I've witnessed some threatening situations,
but nothing that the average tourist will ever encounter, or should worry about.

Have a fantastic time!

David

(*) Why the heck the UK just doesn't grow up and get _rid_ of closing time is
beyond me!

Closing time when the Edinburgh Festival is on can be as late as 4:30 AM, news
yesterday was that all tickets for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo were already sold
out. But there are plenty of things to do, The Fringe has over 1,000 different
theatrical groups performing from 10:30 AM till 2:30AM and then there is the
music, film, beer and other festivals too. It's magic in August in Edinburgh, have
a great time.

Hang on- does that mean that pubs don't have a set closing time? Can you buy a drink
in Edinburgh at 4.15am?

I've never been robbed in Edinburgh [so far], and I lived there for quite some time.
Beware of pickpockets, as everywhere else, but I felt quite safe there.

Yeah - they ask all Americans to sign up for the mugging so that they can plan their
other criminal exploits better.

No, it's just that they have a range of different closing times.

This one I can't answer. Maybe someone younger will know You certainly used to be
able to buy drink until around about that time, then you'd have to wait an hour or so
until the first early morning pubs opened.

Hi Aramis, thanks for the reply. I've been trying to access your website so that I can register but the link doesn't seem to work. Maybe the spelling?

Ian Rankin's "Mortal Causes", and Quintin Jardine's "Skinner's Festival" are two
crime novels set in a festival milieu.

Which festival: Edinburgh International Festival, Jazz & Blues, Science, Fringe,
Folk, Children's International Theatre, Book Festival, Film Festival,
Storytelling Festival.

In Canada, there is also a closing time. In Quebec it's 3am while Ontario it's 2am.

Are there countries where there is no closing time?

In many mediterranean countries, and elsewhere. "Closing time" refers usually to
pubs, which in England close usually at 11pm. The problem is that:

1) it means that people often tend to drink more to 'get it in' before 11pm

2) you get large drunken crowds outside pubs

Nightclubs are open longer. However, I've noticed that in come cities like Liverpool
where nearly all clubs close at 2am, they still have problems with crowds and fights
on closing. In London, where clubs are open until 4 and longer (but stop serving at
3am) I've noticed less of a problem.

But i sense that in this "transition period" <read sucking EU co#> they will
engage in that close-up activity too...
