I've just seen this report in today's "Mirror" about a 7 day old Jewish baby boy who was circumcised in London and died of oxygen starvation and cardiac arrest:
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/topstor...name_page.html Unusual but very sad. The story caused me to remember that circumcision was a very hot topic on this board! ![]() See: http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=328362 Last edited by Rete : Feb 15th 2007 at 7:45 pm. Sorry to hear that sad news.'
My son was circumsised by a mohel in London and is now 9 years old. Every doctor that has seen him remarks on what a 'nice' circumcision it is. Not sure how it can be described as 'nice, but I think I get their drift. In the UK when he was born (not sure about now) circumsision was not offered as part of the NHS system. In fact, the midwife who was assigned to us told me she wasn't supposed to even help me dress it or anything. Of course, being the wonderful person she was, she did help. Being that there are a lot more Muslims in the UK when I left, does anyone know if circumcision is done by the NHS now? |

I remember when I was in hospital having one of my children that some of the Indians would shave the hair off the baby's head. Then again, some Chinese do that too. |

I happen to know that there are medical reasons for circumcision in certain instances. Roy |

i guess you mean at the time of birth and if so then i would go along with your comment ...if offered to the parents then a charge should be made accordingly.

By comparison our useless GP at the time told us to pull back his foreskin while bathing him, regardless of if it hurt. It did hurt and he screamed. We then decided to take him to Pendlebury childrens hospital in Salford where he had the old chop in no time. Very professional and it has never bothered him. My opinion (if anynody gives a foreskin) is that if there is no medical or religious reason for it then it is mutilation for the sake of it. Back when my wife was my girlfriend she delighted in telling her friends that I was uncircumcised. They were all shocked and curious and said they had never met an american boy with all his bits in tact. I was not over the moon at her sharing this info ha ha. According to the missus though, it all began as an anti masturbation scheme in the 50's over here. Silly bunch of misguided christians that they are. Anyway, there you go. Hope this helps and apols for gratuitously saying foreskin a lot. |

Which brings me to another bit of useless info. We are moving to the home of Kellogs (Battle Creek in Michigan) where when you wake in the morning your car is literally covered with sugar. I wonder if it is like Willy Wonka in there (Willy? Circumcision? The thread remains on topic). He apparently had a brother who pioneered various treatments for the mentally ill and set up a sanitarium in Battle Creek. The wife reckons he is just as famous as the cornflake guy but I am sceptical. For one thing nobody I know has ever heard of him and for another, cornflakes before bed are much better for you than electro shock treatment or a pre-frontal lobotomy. Bet he was a barrel of laughs. And circumcised too.
