Does anyone have any info on how this technical wizardry works please?

Have promised "Grandma" that we'll buy ourselves and her a webcam before we go so she'll be able to chat and see the kids frequently. But I'm blagging it as don't know how it works!

And is the Tesco's internet free phone (once you've paid to purchase it) anything like the Skype phone system? And what the hell is the Skype phone system anyway?!

Memo to self - must stop bigging myself up and sounding like I know what I'm talking about! (When I quite clearly don't!)

Hi ya fairy,

we're doing the same thing. As yet only tried web-cams between us and my brother (both in UK) using Microsoft Messenger 7.5 and it works very well.
We wasn't able to try it whilst in NZ earlier this year so not know about international services. BTW both myself and bro were just using MSN 7.5 as said and a basic Broadband connection.

Can't help with skype, although would love to here other peoples experiences and is skype a cheap option for talking to those left at home.

ok i'm not techno freak (thats hubbys job but he's at work -yippee) don't know about the tesco phone but skype is like MSN (free, just sign up we have both running) & webcams are simple & fantastic, i discussed this with your ;long lost fairy bro, danny somewhere , i'll find it & get back to you.

you need MSN messenger (just need to sign up with MSN - its ok danny its free )on your computer to start with, then you just install the software on webcam to the comp. easy pesy
web cams cost roughly £45 (logitech quickcam pro 5000) (we got these)you can get them cheaper though

we gave ours to the olds as Christmas presents!!

I was thinking of doing just that - but felt the first question was going to be and how does this work?! Hmmmm!!

I wanted to call my daughter Poppet!! Hubby's choice for the last one so I lost!!

I also lost on calling son Elvis!!

ok i'll get hubby to get techincal with you later, but basically you buy webcam , intstall webcam software on to comp, link to internet (broadband best) & bobs your uncle & fannies your aunt (if the rellies can do it anyone can)

I am pretty crap technology wise. Still haven't mastered the digital camera wouldn't have a clue how to get the pictures off it!!!!

But I have managed to have a webcam chat with my mum in the Uk pretty much every week for the past 4yrs. We use yahoo messenger, we prefer to type talk instead of speak talk, but then we are fast typers. Its great, she has not missed out on the big events in the kids lives like losing their 1st teeth and recently my daughter proudly showed off her newly pierced ears.

Would highly recommend it as a way of keeping in touch.

you can get the head sets for the messenger & skype too which we use
fab way to feep in touch & 'see' the rellies

LOL.... I call my little lad Poppet all the time!! He must think its his name sometimes!!

As for Skype....we use it to call UK every week..... its excellent and pretty cheap too.... I waffle on for hours to my mates just as if I was still in the UK!

Dont ask me any technical stuff though.... I only use it!

Another possibilty is to just get a cam set up watching say your living room ..
send the signal to a cam distruibution point then granny can just look in too see you all at any time she wants.....
