I work in software for government processing so big IT firm is who my interviews and recruitment is with, just wondered what to expect after the references stage really

I think you are best to do a few short contracts to start with, people seem to like an Oz employment history when they take you on full time.

And most people in personnel seem to think you are a back packer on a tmp visa when you first get here

I started on a 2 week contract and 5 years on I'm working full time at the same place.

Blokes are blokes if you dont like fishing there is something wrong. I'm sure he will be welcome - if you run into a suburb that gives you trouble is probably not the sort of place you would want to stay in anyway.

Some jobs do specifiy citizenship but others don't. Just like in the UK - I am Irish so there were some agencies that I could not work for there also but several police forces here have changed their rules due to skill shortages etc.

Yes, he took to fishing ever so well. I sat in the boat with my life vest on (very weak swimmer).

We are planning to settle in Subiaco/West Leederville. After living in West London, I think we need something quite busy. We can save the beach for a day out.

He does all the cooking, I do the housework - works for us.

Talking of cous cous, we are having that tonight.

Good luck with the police - in the UK I was a Vetting Unit Supervisor within the Intelligence Unit, and then a Fingerprint Technician. The police have rejected me hands down at every attempt to join, at AO2 and AO3 level, not even looking at my original level, so 14 years worth of a career counts for diddly squat. The last job I went for was given to a woman I worked with at Emergency Services - she freely admits she is just "OK at data entry" and knows nothing about police work or intelligence gathering/processing, but they have given her a position doing exactly that - me, I didn't even get an interview. I've given up on the police now, too many rejections, all for "not the right experience"

State police will take you with PR, or for temporary jobs even on temp visas. Sounds like Sue has been applying for much the same as me - police intelligence unit stuff, as opposed to National Security Intelligence

This is true. I made sure that my residency status and visa number were emblazoned across the top of my CV in big ugly, but unrecogniseable black and bold letters.

Seems to have worked a treat so far...

It depends on your career also. If your are a skilled tradesman you can start when you get off the plane. I am a maintenance fitter and had to keep fobbing people off as I fancied a bit of a holiday. Money is crap out here though

My OH is a maintenence fitter, currently working in the pharmaceutical industry but has also worked in glass manufacturing and FMCG. We are hoping to be in QLD by end of next year, what do reckon his job chances would be. Any recommendations on agencies or where the best jobs are advertised.
