On car insurance AFAIK you need to cover cost of repair/replacement to your vehicle, cost of repair/replacement to any other vehicle involved.
Or is this one of the special NZ cases where you are only responsible for your own damage, and don't even have to have insurance if you don't want?

I think house insurance is a completely different ball game.

There is no requirement to have any vehicle insurance in NZ; therefore plenty of people do not bother but they are personally liable for the costs of any damage they cause, but good luck getting them to pay.

Everything is with ASB. Vehicles are with AA.
Don't know the costs, the wife covers all that stuff.

All our insurances are with Tower. As we have all four policies there, we get a 20% discount with them which helps.

Wifes recent renewal for her car has gone up around $100 but we have an agreed value in place with them if its a loss. The amount is a lot more than what the car is worth, but the difference in the payments is minimal. At the moment, its affordable for us.

Not looking forward to the renewals next year mind

No chance of that one. Anyway, they would look to your insurance to pay out.

Yes. Many vehicles on our roads have no insurance as it is not compulsory , except if on finance I think but am not sure.

I'm getting a bit pig sick of AMI right now. I am not at all sure anyone is listening or reading their end. What did I expect.

Unless there's been some policy changes, I think its mandatory to have insurance if you have purchased the car on finance.

We just got the renewal letter for our house insurance too, going up a hefty $60 per month.

I have been shopping around for a cheaper option and AA seems the most reasonable so far.

Home insurance ASB, $2200 gone up by about $500 - came in cheaper than AA even with 2 discounts. Note that $600 of the premium was EQC and Fire service levy. Never claimed but no doubt floods up north last year are a factor.

Contents - about $500 with ASB - renewal is April. Wonder how hard we'll be spanked.

Car AA - No claims in last 10 years but gone up by $100 as they say cost of repairs is escalating and costs have to be passed on.

Needless to say just put up my clinic fees by a whopping 4%, for the first time in 2 years.

Welcome to NZ, bring lots of money

Just to add to my reply above.
Renewal came in for our contents insurance (actually AA not ASB as stated above). Never claimed for anything in NZ, cover based on $100,000, $300xs, Chch, alarm and cameras.

$583.10 last years premium
$778.68 this year.
33.5% increase.
Suspected it would be bad when they also sent me a text message telling me to brace for pain.

Has anyone got a good recipe for rat or stray dog?

With crispy 'roach.

Yup. No escaping the incredible rise in premiums . Then there are the rates.
