10 Things Most Americans Don’t Know About America

It's just sport, FFS. If a sport is what you measure your country's worth by, you probably want to rethink your world view a tad ...

I came to that conclusion in 1970, 14th June to be precise. (108th minute)

Here's something from the Tragically Hip, a band that is world famous in Canada that's apropos to this tangent:
If there's a goal that everyone remembers,
It was back in ol' '72
We all squeezed the stick and we all pulled the trigger
And all I remember is sitting beside you
You said you didn't give a f**k about hockey
And I never saw someone say that before
You held my hand and we walked home the long way
You were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr...

Begs the question why the US does not take part in many International Team Sports. Well not seriously.

Actually, I'll give them their due, issues with consistency aside, I think they are heading in the right direction with their soccer team.

If you haven't eating a family-size bag of Doritos and drunk a 64-ounce Coke in one sitting, driven a monster truck across Texas, and gained 75 pounds from eating McDonald's and KFC, then you can't possibly understand America and don't deserve to live.
On the other hand, if you've managed to pick up an obesity habit and learn to enjoy Jesus and NASCAR during your time here, then consider yourself an honorary USCer and grab yourself a hot dog.

In this regard, the US is not worth much. Are there any other gems you wish to teach me?

Are you saying we do not compete in international competition?
The UK is demonstrably better here, and that gives you the right at some sort of criticism?
We actually do take part in most sports, but alas, we do not win the medals each time.
I imagine we lack in comparison to the UK in hubris, arrogance and stereotyping as well.
YOu win the gold medal hands down, frankly.

The US certainly does have a lot to be proud of, far beyond sporting achievements, though. That was my point.

In motor sport it's the same story, with occasional overseas excursions by Indy/CART not generating enough interest, and aside from a few trips to the north and south by the Busch series, NASCAR hasn't even bothered. Conversely I don't know why F1 does bother because the interest in the US is limited, and F1 has spent most of the past 35 years trying to find the worst possible tracks to showcase F1. Caesar's Palace parking lot anyone?
