For my money, the North East coast trumps the West in every way except that it's a bit colder. Northumberland is so beautiful and the Yorkshire coast too - Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby etc. The North West coast is OK, but doesn't have the cliffs and the little villages toppling down hills. Plus if you're on the Northumberland Coast you have the whole of inland Northumberland to explore, not to mention Scotland and North Yorkshire, and if you're on the Yorkshire coast you have the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. (But I suppose if you're on the West Coast it's not too much of a drive up into Cumbria ...)
But it is colder and dryer than the West Coast where it rains more but tends to be warmer.
My mum was just down in Norfolk visiting the coast and she was so disappointed. She said she had been spoiled by the Yorkshire coast - she was expecting dramatic cliffs and rock formations and it just wasn't the same. I told her she could have just gone to Whitby and saved herself a lot of hassle
Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose

I walk 3-4 miles every day up and down the hills around my village and say 'hi' to every person I meet. They greet me with a smile, some know my name now (after only 4 weeks), and not one one them has tattoos or pierced body parts or multi-colored hair -although it wouldn't bother me if they did. They're a very safe, rural, "conservative with a small c" lot.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm actually living in Britain because my corner of it bears no relation to the fears expressed on this forum. My neighbours all have kids who are polite and well-behaved, the young people in the area are quiet and don't cause any trouble, and the young guys down the pub are buying each other drinks, not getting into fights.
If that's not the case in the areas you're looking at, look again. No one should live with crappy neighbours if they don't have to.

We just spent a week in Ripon, and found everyone we met very friendly and accommodating. Bus drivers for instance, much more friendly and helpful than what you'd find in Devon, for instance. I could definitely live there. We also visited Saltburn by the Sea and Whitby, very different from each other but that's another two towns I could live in..

A propos Whitby, watched Britain's Best Drives episode on the North Yorkshire Moors on BBC iplayer. "Richard Wilson follows routes raved about in motoring guides of the mid-20th century. Here, he drives from Scarborough to Whitby via the Yorkshire moors." Most enjoyable

I was in England for a holiday, just got back on Tuesday. My son & I spent a week in Ripon and one of the days we were there, we drove to Saltburn-by-the-Sea and then down to Whitby. In Whitby we had a folkloric fish tea in the Magpie cafe. Also climbed the steps to visit the abbey and walked around town for a couple of hours. I liked both towns, Saltburn and Whitby, and could live in either.. Different though they are. It's nice to be on the railway, even at the end of a slow branch line.
We do see the abbey in the programme, and it was a misty day. It was breathtaking!
Did you have a lovely time on your holiday? Any closer to selecting a place? How about Exeter - did you manage to get over there?

We've gone to the south west for holidays every time we've been to England over the last many years, so this time, going on my own, I decided to spend the time in North Norfolk and Yorkshire Dales (with a few days staying with my sister in Sussex and a week in London at the end of the trip.). I loved Norwich and Sheringham. Specificaly, as a city, Norwich has a lot more going for it than Exeter. However, I still think that realistically we are more likely to move to South Devon or West Somerset than Norfolk. If it was just me, I would probably move to Yorkshire or the North East but in terms of getting my wife to move to England, the SW will be an easier sell..

I don't know how important this is when you are actually living there, but Norwich has a substantial medieval centre, like York does, with many old churches, nice old streets etc. etc. The cathedral is wonderful, with a beautiful cathedral close. While it was bombed in the war, not that much of historical importance was lost whereas unfortunately Exeter's old churches and historical centre was almost completely destroyed.
I noticed a dozen or more really interesting second hand book shops in Norwich. In Exeter, I don't know of any (maybe there are a couple and I missed them.). Norwich has an absolutely superb daily market in the market square in the centre. You can get everything there from fish and chips, a mug of tea for fifty pence, butchers, green grocers, fish, Chinese groceries, books and DVDs, you name it. Theatre, art galleries, medieval castle, museums. Wonderful new public library in a beautiful new building.
Plenty of housing, Victorian terraces, luxury flats along the river, whatever you want at different price levels. Decent train connections, although the trip to London seems slow. However, in a way that is a blessing because maybe it keeps house prices low..
Nearby, and accessible via train and buses, you have the coast and the Norfolk Broads, not to mention NT properties, steam railways, great cycling country, gorgeous villages and country churches.
I could definitely live in Norwich..
