I suspect even in RSA that will not present as an option at this stage..
No chance. The system is dysfunctional and open to incompetence - but he won't be able to bribe his way out. There are stories of people being convicted of murder and being able to pay a fine rather than go to jail, but that's rare and I don't recall one for a while. This is too high profile - if guilty, he's going to jail.

Cue some helpful soul posting from Wikipedia soon enough. I don't think the actual number matters. It is a) far too high and b) the vast majority is either domestic, or takes place in poor shanty towns.

It's not like people walk the streets here, mowing people down with 9mms.

Exactly. It's the same with the US. Thousands and thousands of people are murdered here every year, but it would be silly to suggest that a) you can't walk down the street or sleep safe if your bed without getting shot and b) that the odds of being a victim of violent crime are far greater in some places than others inside the country.

Um yea.

Not exactly the same with the US. And although the US is known to be relatively unsafe, its nothing like SA.

I was referring to the principle - a high national crime rate does not mean that the risk is spread equally over the entire country.

Thing is, no one ever claimed it did. Hence the straw man.

I believe 'straw man' refers to the nature of the debate Ed is having with you.
