So I am currently Sat in the Toronto Airport writing this message now...
I have just had to say Good-bye to my girlfriend We met this time last year in Australia... I had been there 10 days... My plan was to stay there two years and do my whatever... I ended up leaving there after 8 months to be with her in Canada... My time ( vistor visa ) here is now up... I am heading back to the UK... my only comfort is I know I will see her again in a few months... ![]() It sucks... anyone else doing long-distance or done it before? |

It can be done. But it is a test, oh yes it is. Only the strong survive. |

Wise words Macca. I'm sure they've saved the OP from a relationship that could only have ended in a closed casket funeral. ![]()

Like Penelope waiting, Abelard & Heloise, Romeo & Juliet, Ken & Deirdre, this romance has all the makings of a classic though I fear it will end in tears - and not just those of me and thee. I think we've said all that needs to be said on this issue. |

Yes we have.
For 2 years before I moved to Canada, where we were together for 4 1/2 yrs before I had to move back to the UK for family reasons. We've been apart for almost 15 months since then, but will be together again next week when she comes here. I got the International Favourites add-on on my O2 phone so we could call each other, and we also keep in touch through Facebook (playing scrabble online helps us have fun together) and message each other via Skype. Also, e-card sites, sending real cards and packages through snail mail also help. I'm not going to say it's easy, but if you schedule regular calling times with each other and remember the time difference, it makes it less hard. The hard parts are usually when a hug is the best response but you can't as she's too far away. |

I did it for a year. It was tough but it accelerated our growth as a couple, what we wanted from life, and our commitment to each other. That year was the first year of our relationship, we had only spent two weeks together in person.
I let a lot of things slide cause I didn't want to cause arguments that with such a distance could push us apart. We had to do a kind of crash course on our "issues" when we finally lived in the same country and it was hard but definitely worth it. Doing as many trips as possible and keeping your eyes on the prize is key. Its a struggle, but if its worth it then the struggle will be soon forgotten when the distance is over. |
