My computer has started running very slow. Takes ages to move from page to page on all websites. When I type I can type about 4 to 5 words before the words appear. Looking on the internet I find that quite a few people have had PC slowness problems after downloading FF 12. Various solutions are recommended...which don't seem to work or I don't understand what they are talking about. I have cleared the cache/history...rebooted the machine several times...run the virus software.

Has anyone else had slowness problems with FF 12? Has anyone got any recommendations...in layman's terms please?

So first off, check you've got the right culprit: Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and click the Processes tab.

If it is FF, then you have 2 options: wait till they correct it or move to Chrome.

How do I tell if it is FF 12? I tried to download Chrome yesterday but for some reason it wouldn't let me. Can't use IE either.

The Processes tab will show you what's sucking all the CPU power.

Although it sounds more serious than just FF given the extra info

It says firefox *32 145.440K Is that what you mean?

There should be a column marked CPU. Sort on that column, descending. The process using the most CPU will now be at the top. The figure is the percentage of the total CPU power.

The figure you quote is the memory the process is taking.

I'm using FF12 on Linux -- it's using around 1% of CPU power and 149k or so of memory.

So if FF is hogging the CPU, the figure will be 10% or higher. Also, you'll probably notice the fans getting louder as the fan tries to keep the processor cool.

I downloaded a Microsoft update before lunch and the computer seems OK now. Currently the CPU is jumping from 1 to 10...usually not going over 5. You are spot on...the last few days I had noticed the fan getting louder and more frequent.

So, sounds like you had an issue and it's righted itself. If it happens again, don't let the computer keep running with the fans screaming for too long -- it's not good for the processor.

Starting to slow down again. The CPU keeps going into the 50/60/70's....so I'm ditching FF for the time being and using Chrome.

There was also a problem with Flash going a bit bonkers on some sites, it does the same in Chrome though, if you keep a tab of Facebook, Twitter or Google+ it tends to suck the life out of things after a while.

Although I keep getting notices...I can't install the latest edition of Flash. Don't do FB or Twitter and I don't keep a tab of Google.

So far so good using Chrome.
