We like going to where the locals eat unless it is for a very special ocassion. Where do you live in Spain? We live in a small village just north of Marbella in the mountains..only twenty minutes from the coast.
Italy is the country for food, as long as you are not on a tight budget, no bargains here.

Monica's Shack has always had an excellent reputation.
Has anybody been to Monica's new restaurant - which is between the Kingfisher Villa and Santana Hotel?

Yes all the places I mentioned are typical Goan local restaurants which includes the adjective grubby but in the main the food is OK and cheap. I have only had bad stomch after eating once this year and that was at La Plage..our French friends took us there and what a rip off for a stomach ache!

Would not go back to Stomach but do eat in typicl local restaurnts. La Plage is such a rip off, been once, can't remember if we ate or just had a drink and went elsewhere when we saw the rip off prices.

I'm surprised at the comments for La Plage, anytime I have been its been great. Yes its a bit more expensive than 'local' places, but still good value for the quaility in my opinion. It's been a couple of years since I was there right enough

Its very expensive compared with local places, no ambience and the food is not that great compared with a proper French restaurant. Everyone has different experiences of restaurants here but in the main local Goan places are better value for money if not that neat and tidy. Anands fish restaurant is great between Siolim and Arpora..

If your asking about Anands its on the piece of road that runs from Bobby`s bar crossroads ( left goes to Anjuna petrol pump) and the next crossroads heading towards Siolim. Its on the left hand side just before the wood yard and is closed on a Monday.

Goan friends all recommend Stomach - we have been a few times but were unable to find a seat and were completely ignored by the staff so we left.
Florentines still gets my No. 1 vote for best value authentic Goan food.
Will have to try out some of the Mapusa places that have been mentioned (most places there are quite off-putting from outside), so far have only tried Satyahera (good, and good value) and Xavier's (my favourite haven from the heat and mess of the market).

We live here because we like and prefer life without large supermarket chains like Tescos. We do not even use Newtons as its far more expensive than other shops. I expect the day will come when there will be large supermarkets and out of town shopping centres but hopefully we will be long gone by then.
