Hello my name is Wendy and i am looking to move over to New Zealand, probably in about 5 years time. I'd go tomorrow but my partner wouldn't want to leave before his daughter from a previous relationship is 16 to give her the choice of coming with us. So thats where the 5years comes from. I have a 14 year old son who at the moment has no intentions of coming with us, and a little boy who me and my partner have together who is 4.
My partner is a plant fitter on large diggers, chain saws, mowers, he has qualifications in hydraulic pumps etc, hes a bit of a mechanic also, so a jack of all trades!!! Me im a qualified nursery nurse, with an NVQ level 3, is this something that would be recognised, or have an equivalent in NZ? I have seen on seek that lots of childcare jobs ask for nursery teachers even in a baby room, would that be the proffessional name for my role over there rather than nursery nurse.? We would be looking to be in the rodney district in Aukland to be near my Auntie who moved over around 5 years ago now, she should be able to do citizenship soon. Also which visa would we be best to apply for if my partner was the main applicant and we wanted to get residency staight away? And would it be best to sell our home in the UK or rent it out? I have soooo many questions, but will keep comming back, by the way im 34 and my partner is 32!! Hope to meet some lovely people and one day meet over in New Zealand!! Wendy |

Hi Wendy
5 years time, a lot of things can happen in that time. My advice for now would be to try and save as much money as you can to ease the cost of making the move and having money in hand for any emergencies that crop up. Keep an eye on the lists of occupations required over here and see what best fits. Not sure if the NVQ's carry across but that is something you can be looking into or see what type of qualifications do carry across and see if you can obtain one.

money - depends if you have work to come to or coming over to look for work.
I think a figure for a family of four, costs covering ITA, container and air fares can be anywhere from 8k to 12K+. Then of course the cost once you get here, rental, school, health care, leisure activities etc. It certainly isn't cheap ![]()

I'm hoping that it will be straight to work but wont hold to that. I didn't make such a bad figure in my head then of 10 grand!! Will put more aside tho you can never be too sure of things cropping up etc!!!
Think if we sold up id have an extra 25k minimum. Hopefully if house prices move up a bit it could be more, can only hope hey!!!! |

Hello and a big welcome to the New Zealand section of BE from the Consierge in Spain.
You will find excellent information in the BE Wiki, not forgetting the Living and Moving Abroad forum that will help you, another set of great help is the permanent threads at the TOP of each forum, they are very pertinent to that particular forum and makes sensible reading. BE Moderators deal with any problems that arise such as inappropriate posts, spammers etc, you will find their names at the bottom right hand side of each forum's index in bold font. Also there are Consierges who can support and guide you. Please contact me if I can give you any further help. Rosemary |

Hi Wendy & welcome to our friendly NZ forums. As MrsF has said, 5 years is a long time. At least you have plenty of time to plan & save. The more money you can bring with you then the easier life will be. NZ is not a cheap place to live. We are taxed on every dollar we earn
However, it is a beautiful country & we enjoy the lifestyle we have out here. Have you visited NZ at all? We live in the Rodney District, on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. It's a great place to live with lots to do. I can't help you as regards to NVQ's & Nursery nurses. But I know others have asked about this, so I would suggest you try the <search> function at the top of the page. If you don't get any help from that then start a new thread in the main forum.
