Hi Folks, I'm an Englishman married to an American citizen and living in the U.S. Can
anyone tell me how we can get a British passport for my wife? Eventually we will move
back to England, and i would like to get a passport sorted out for her. Thank you for

She will need to get residence in the UK, live there for whatever the qualifying
period is and then apply for UK citizenship - pretty much the same as a Brit has to
do to get US citizenship.

I'm assuming here that most countries require a holder of a passport to be a citizen of that country. I'm always amazed that there are some citizens of the US who DON'T realize that the US requires this in order to apply for and get a US passport.

Could someone list the countries where citizenship is NOT required in order to hold that country's passport?

I think a lot of people assume that because their new foriegn spouse can become an
American citizen, they automatically get citizenship of their spouses country. Of
course this not going to happen without going thru the same procedures in that
country's immigration process.

The last time I suggested that someone find an easy-to-display-in-public identifying
mark on their body and use it in one of those petition thingies, Andy Platt
volunteered that he had mentioned the length of his todger in his application. A true
upper voltan, this Andy Platt, eventhough we did not hear about any tattoos on his
todger. A fine tattoo like that would make the INS-wallah's day !! Since they had
cancelled the Argentinian VW, I propose that we replace them with Upper Voltan
visitors with those fine tattoos. The more visa stamps they put on it, the longer it
will grow !!

She will have to live in the UK for around three years, successfully naturalise as a
British citizen, and then apply before she is entitled to a British passport. It's
not as simple as you imply. One has to fulfill the residency requirements in the UK
first. The same is true if you wanted to obtain a US passport.

It would probably work out something like this: enter UK on a spouse visa (must get
this before entering the UK), apply for ILR 1 year (or perhaps 6 months) later, apply
to become a Brtish citizen (could take as long as 18 months last time I read about
the process) and then apply for a British passport.

I live in a very ecletic neighborhood. Along with the upmarket kitchen showrooms
where you probably couldn't buy a cupboard handle for less than $30, there are three
tattoo parlours within walking distance. So far I have managed to resist their charms
- particularly resisted having a tattoo on my third leg!
