Default Registering a new Luxury car in Mallorca, Costs & How To Help Please!

Well I guess the title says it all really, Planing on moving to Mallorca in six months time and will be treating myself to a nice new "luxury" car to which I will buy NET (ie no local (German) tax for import only) from Germany to bring to Mallorca, pay all the taxes/charges and then use it!

I understand that there are more than just local VAT to worry about, Luxury car taxes and all sorts... and the expense of registering a new car in Spain, it's all very confusing as I can never get the same answer from 2 different people!

Can someone point me in the direction of a definative FAQ or response to how much i'm looking at paying and how i'd go about registered it (It will be a new vehicle of "high" value) and are the taxes different from what part of Spain you live in?

I very much appreciate your help on this matter.

Hello Zel,

Personally I think you would be crazy to bring a brand new high value luxury car to Spain, as the Spanish have no respect for the "Filthy Rich British and their cars" A car like that will be an exellent target for those who "dont have" to put some wonderful tram lines all down the side of it.

But if this is something you want to do then here is some information for you I do hope it answers your questions.

Good Luck.. David

Bringing a car to Spain
You may bring you car over to Spain from the UK, as long as you have owned it for at least six months prior to moving. You cannot sell, rent out or transfer a car that has been imported tax-free and duty-free for 12 months once in Spain.

If you wish to import the car and register it in Spain you must pay the 12% import tax. Tax can vary depending on engine c.c. If you take out a residence permit this all changes. Your car must then be registered in Spain but you can be exempt from the 12% registration tax. Get proper advice.

As a Spanish resident, your car with foreign number plate can only be driven from the Spanish border or port of entry to the place of residence in Spain and registration with the department of Transport and application for Spanish plates should take place during the first 30 days of arrival in the country. For further information, requirements and fees, contact the "Direccion General de Trafico" in the area where you set up residence. The "Real Automovil Club de Espana" with offices in major cities will assist with the formalities although new membership may be necessary.

You must hand in the British registration documents to the DVLA and obtain a certificate of Permanent Export. The DVLA can advise you on this relatively simple process.

You will need a standardisation certificate (ficha reducida), which can be obtained from any licensed Spanish engineer.

The following taxes must be paid:

# VAT (IVA) at 16% on a tax-free car (on which VAT hasn't yet been paid) imported from the UK.

# Registration tax (impuesto sobre circulación de veh*culos) at 12% of the vehicle's current value (based on the original market price in Spain). However, you do not need to pay this tax if you are to be a permanent resident in Spain and have imported a vehicle on which you have already paid the VAT.

Non-residents can bring their car from the UK to Spain without paying Spanish taxes, but you can only drive the car in Spain for six months in any year - which is the duration non-residents can remain in the country. The car must be taxed in its country of registration.

The paperwork for importing a car is far easier than it used to be, but many people still hire a gestor to sort it out for them.

Registration

Whether you import a car into the country, or buy a car in Spain, you need to register it at the local provincial traffic department (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico de Málaga, c/Mauricio Moro Pareto 13, tel. 95 235 7200. Open Mon-Fri 9am-2pm).

If you are a permanent resident in Spain, you must obtain Spanish registration plates once you have imported the car. To do that, you will need:

# Your residence card and photocopy

# Current foreign driving licence and photocopy

# Registration number of a Spanish-registered vehicle

# One passport photograph

# 16.20 euros, payable at the traffic department

Driving licences

You are permitted to drive with a British or EU licence in Spain for up to six months a year, as a non-resident. But you will need to take it to the local provincial traffic department to be stamped and registered.

If you intend to spend more than six months a year in Spain - and hence are a resident - you will need to obtain a Spanish licence, with form TASA2.3 from the local provincial traffic department.

You must, under Spanish law, carry your driving licence with you at all times.

Road tax

All Spanish-registered vehicles must pay road tax. The amount is set by local municipalities and based on the power of your car. It can vary from 20-220 euros per year. Malaga is one of the cheapest provinces to tax your car.

You must pay your road tax between March and May. Contact your local town hall to ask when and to collect a payment form. You can pay in person at the town hall (though this usually involves long queues), or better, by post or direct debit.

Hi There,

Thank you very much for your help on this subjec it's much appreciated..

So basicly once Spanish VAT has been paid it's a further 12% for a new car registration? is this a flat fee across any value vehicle?

Also is there no way of having the 12% payable on your purchase price (and not the Spanish retail price as you mentioned) as the German purchase will be cheaper than the Spanish dealer price. ?

Having almost completed the process on our car, you do not actually need an export certificate as long as you have the new style log book. I know this is ok, as friends I have been helping used theirs. It used to be the case with the old style, now simpler.

Re the Spanish not liking "nice cars" we have never seen any problems around us. The only thing I have noticed is they find women drivers unusual.
But I suppose some places there are problems unfortunately.

Hello Zel,

Right from what I understand from your post is that you are buying a car in Germany without paying the tax on it in the country of sale, so it is a net price you will be paying?

Then when you import the car into Spain, you will have to pay the import tax as it is a new car that has not payed tax in the country of origin. (correct?)

Unless you have owned the car for at least six months prior to you importing it to Spain, no matter where you bought it. Any EU or Non EU citizen taking up residence in Spain will be exempt from Import Duties, IVA (16%), Car registration tax (12% or 7%).

To benefit from the above is that you must have owned the car for at least six months, and you must obtain a certificate of "baja de residence" from your old town hall if that is possible, if not from your countries consulate in Spain.

The procedure must be started not later than one month after your residence permit is granted.

You will also need the services of a Gestor because the procedure is very complicated. Even without the above tax break the cost will be of the order of 500 euros to 1000 euros.

Importing a Car into Spain

This 12% can vary from community to community it is the town hall that sets the tax for the area where you live, I do not know what you will be charge for Mallorca you will have to ask someone on that question.
