Default zero deductible collision damage waiver (CDW) is not full coverage?

I'm going to rent a car in Italy (Rome to Pienza). Not quite familiar
with the car rental terms. Autoeurope offered zero deductible CDW &
Theft protection. But there are footnotes saying insurance does not
cover damage to windscreens, roof, tyre, underside ...
Is this normal practice of rental?
I only had experience in USA (Avis & National), where I paid for full
coverage, but didn't aware if there were such condition.

Thanks for any advice!

Hertz covers the windscreen.

http://www.hertz.is/main/view.jsp?branch=1037

They cover collision and comprehensive.

That also excludes suspension damage, tires, etc.

Avis just sells LDW insurance. The web site does not state what is
covered.

I've rented cars several times in Europe, (UK and Ireland), not Italy.

I've never come across this practice before. Whenever I've had zero
deductable (or fixed deductable) it covers everything which may be wrong
with the car, howsoever caused.

No cover for roof and underside damage is fairly typical
I've paid extra for tyre and windshield cover in Australia.

Ground the vehicle in the USA and the rental company will
likley NOT pay out on the insurance.

I did ask autoeurope how much to cover them all, but they reply no
such insurance to buy !

Below's the reply i got:
"Auto Europe includes collision and theft insurances with 0
deductibles with
all our rentals in Italy. However, this 0 deductible does not cover
the
undercarriage, tires or windows on the car and there isn't any type of
insurance that would cover these parts of the car. So, the body itself
and
the interior comes with a 0 deductible along with theft of the car,
but just
some parts of the car is not covered. "

As I say its not unusual to exclude roof or underside
damage, however wiindshield cover and tyres can certainly
be covered in many countries.

I doubt Autoeurope itself provides any coverage. Actual coverage will end
up depebnding upon which company the actual rental is from.

BTW I remain convinced that if you shop around and find some excuse for
qualifying for a discount or another, you'll end up doing every bit as
well renting directly, and without having to prepay. As to insurance, it
might be worth looking at what options the various companies actually
offer.

Finally, look at what your credit card offers you.

Incorrect Autoeurope like Holiday Autos purchase insurance packages
that are bundled as part of the rental and are quite separate from that
offered by the rental companies.

such as AutoEurope

European issued cards offer NO COVER , the only exceptions
are some of the Platinum cards.

Check with your credit card company. They may cover the collision and
theft with no deductable. BUT THE COVERAGE MAY REQUIRE THAT YOU
DECLINE THE COVERAGE OFFERED BY AUTOEUROPE. This is what happened to
me when I had a wheel stolen in Britain a few years ago. The
deductable on the collision coverage in the rental package was 150
pounds. It would have been paid in full by my credit card company had
I declined the other collision coverage.

No. Autoeurope is not a rental car company but a wholesaler/consolidator.

This guy is renting in Italy. Almost every credit card specifically
excludes Italy for coverage, and essentially no rental company in
Italy will rent a car without the Required CDW.

My two CCs don't.

I have had rentals quoted *without* CDW. What is mandatory is insurance
against theft and the like in Italy.

I've checked with Diners and another VISA Gold (issued by a local bank
in HongKong), none of them has coverage for car rental.

I got another quote from initaly.com, which actually redirected to
autoeurope.com. But this time, the quote came from US (last time it
was UK autoeurope), costing US$213 for 4 days, Fiat Punto 4-door, CDW
& TP at zero deductible, rented with "EuropCar" (the previous one was
"Auto Europa"). The mentioned footnote was not stated this time, but
when i asked, their answer was the same that those are not covered.

I've made the prepayment for this one, after shopping around Hertz,
Avis, Budget, europcar.com.
