HI... My question is, Can a greencard holder stay outside US for more than 6 months ? How long he/she can stay outside ?

Yes, a green card holder can stay outside the USA for over 6 months, if there is a good reason, and he does not abandon his ties to the USA. He will probably take a trip to secondary on his way back into the USA, and will probably have to explain why he was out so long.

There is no hard and fast rule about how long a PR can be outside the USA without abandoning PR status. Each case is looked at on an individual basis.

They can stay outside the US for as long as they want to.

How much trouble they will have if they subsequently attempt to return to the US is a different question and one which has no simple clearcut answer.

Hi:

One thing to remember, do not believe the myth that you can actually reside outside the United States and keep the green card provided you come back for a short trip very year or so.

Second thing -- posing your question in terms of "how long?" will lead to misleading answers.
