Default i-485 "Nonimmigrant Visa Number" Red number or "control number" ?

On the I-485 (Part 3.), it asks for the "Nonimmigrant Visa Number".
Is this the red 8 digit number on the B-2 visa or is it the black
"Control Number" at the top of the B-2 visa?

Anyone 100% sure about this?

Hi:

I don't think they really care. The old "Bouroughs" visas had a number roller in the machine which generated a "visa number." That is what the I-485 would ask for. That question has not been changed. It was quite common for such visas to be printed over numbered "counterfoils". [Many posts didn't use the counterfoils. Some just pasted the counterfoil to the page. Others pasted the counterfoil over the page seam to preven razor blade transfers to another passport. Lagos used the counterfoil over the page seam, pasted a picture on the other side of the page the visa was printed on and THEN put an impression seal through the counterfoil, visa and picture. But Lagos has always been different].

However, some years ago, the Department of State dropped the "Bouroughs" visas and started issuing the "MRV" visas -- this visa has the red number preprinted on the BLANK visa sticker and then the actual visa is printed on the visa sticker with the "control number." In my mind, the red number was the equivalent of the old counterfoil number and the control number was the equivalent to the old "visa number."

This was pretty clear in my mind. Then I've discussed this with other attorneys noting what people on this NG have been doing ["looky at what the DIY's are doing!"] only to get a reaction from the other attorneys saying that is what THEY do.

Curiously enough, its never been a problem. Also, you put in a photocopy of the visa in any case.

So, put in EITHER number.
