Question UK qualified Electricians working in Australia

Hi, we are in the process of emigrating to Australia (our application is being processed).

My husband qualified as an electrician in 2004 so he didn't have enough experience to come over as a skilled migrant on his electrician job. Luckily for us previous to this he was a fitter so he got the skills assessment on his old experience.

I've heard through the grapevine that its really difficult for UK qualified electricians to get work in Australia without going back to college. Is this true?

Simon is 16th edition and has his testing and inspection certificates.

Can anyone advise what will happen when we get there and if there is anything he should do. I understand he shoudl get a TRA assessment done on this but do you have to be working for a certain amount of time in the profession before they will do one for you? Also, does anyone know what the fee was for this (we used an agent for our application).

Not sure if it matters but we are hoping to emigrate to NSW, Bateau Bay or around that area.

Thanks in advance!

Emma

Just to add to that, if he hasn't got either of those then he can do a tafe course.

Thanks for the advice.

I've emailed the people at the link you gave.

He only qualified in 2004 (got a job as a trainee in 2003) so that means he can't apply for it until 2011.

Does this mean that he won't be able to work as an electrician when we come over? Or is it simply a case of him doing a further college course (please say he won't have to start the training from scratch - he's already done several years at night school whislt working to re-train as an electrician)!!

Thanks.

Emma

Tafe is like Uni.

The TRA should be able to tell you what he needs to do to be able to work in Australia if he doesn't have enough experience. I really can help with that as I don't know all that much about it.

Hi I'm interested in this as we are in process of TRA form STILL, not sure how many yrs will be enough.

Officially, He started college in 2000 doing course (16th Edition), 1st yr f/t, then went on to do Inspecting Testing and Commissioning.
Started work for Contractor in 2001 while going back to college 1 day a week.

Completed Education begining 2003 and became Supervisor/Manager in Dec 2003, but still a working role. (running jobs and following plans etc, ordering stock, checking work, training apprentices, testing etc).

Will this be enough and shall we say he has had an informal apprenticship as he went back 1 day a week for 2 yrs? Any advise appreciated.

HELP PLS!

Does anyone know how much electricians earn in Australia? We are hoping to move to Gosford or Newcastle.

Any advice would be most appreciated. All the websites I'm looking at say "above award"??? but none actually say a salary

Thansk.

Hi Emma,

Despite having Melbourne wannabe in name, we are now looking at Newcastle NSW too. I have had a PM back from a lovely lady who checked out the local rag and there was stacks of jobs available for all kinds of sparkies. .

Been told average wage for Self Emp is about $100,000 + but thinking for Emp about $50,000 basic???? But I'm sure if you do the o/t you will earn a lot more..

Where you looking at in Newcastle, did you know there was an Earthquake in the 80's with 13 dead? I only found out tonight, it's put me off a bit Boollaro (or something like that) was the centre of it..

Do you have kids? we have 4, they are 9,2 and 1yr twins. i'm 32 and Si 28 tomorrow! And he's working away again.. Hence wanting to p*ss off to OZ.

Just thinking we could be Neighbours! Ha Ha

Apparently we are looking at Newcastle or Gosford (I've never even been to Australia so have no idea where anything is or where is best)! Do you think that $50,000 is classed as a good salary over there? When you convert to £s it doesn't seem very good does it!

Si only qualified in 2004 (he's 34 and was an engineer fitter before) and I'm 29 (getting near to the dreaded 30 arrrggghhhh). We have one little boy who is 4 next month - you must be shattered with four children, especially twins lol

We got our TRA back yesterday and the agent has told us that they are going to lodge the visa application next week (apparnetly need to lodge before Simon turns 35 in early feb.

When are you hoping to go?

To meet the TRA criteria usually you would have 7 years experience. Informal apprenticeships MAY qualify under Pathway B after 5 years but it's very hit and miss as no 2 skills assessors will agree, and you have to provide training documents etc. Most apply via Pathway D which is 7 years experience. I have all the British quals, and took just about every City and Guilds etc I could, and I still ended up going the 7 year route. These other routes are just too difficult, and TRA advised at the time that they still wanted 7 years experience. I have never met anyone who has passed with less.
The best person is probably John Nye from AMSAS as he specialises in TRA assessments, and we used him for our main visa. I can give you details if you send me PM, and usually he will respond by e-mail quite quickly.
I have too got 4 children, I have 2 boys and twin girls, we seem to manage OK with them.
Newcastle is one area I wasn't keen on having been there. Personally I prefer Coffs Harbour.
