Default NQ Rentals going bankrupt???

I had hired a campervan from NQ Rentals Darwin Depot in June 2004. To
my surprise and when I arrived at the depot I was informed that the
$5,100 Deposit will not refunded to me upon vehicle return (as stated
in your terms & conditions), but will be transferred back via NQ
Rentals head office within 3 business days after the return of the
vehicle. Needles to say I was surprised to hear this, but flying
into Darwin for a 4-day trip to then say "NO, I don't take it" and
find someone else … well I wasn't quite that alert.

I returned the vehicle in orderly condition and without damages and it
was accepted back without complaint. I therefore expected refund of my
deposit in the coming 3 business days.

To my great disappointment, no refund has occurred until the present
date. None of my calls or emails have been answered by NQ Rentals so
far. A$5,100 is quite a scam. What concerns me is comments from NQ
staff that indicate that I may not be the only one.

I wonder whether I got hooked on a money acquisition scheme of a
tourist operation that is on the brink of going bust?

Has anyone had a similar experience or heard about NQ Rentals being in
financial trouble?

Surely it was a credit card charge. Organise a 'charge back'!! And do it
immediately. Your bank will explain how to go about it!!

Also contact the NT Consumers Affairs Dept - and the local Darwin newspaper!

Hi, did you get the bond back? How? I have the same problem - ongoing for 1.5 months now - $5000 is costing me in creditcard interest! Office of Fair trading (Queensland) notified.

Thanks

You can't read!
He wrote: "$5000 is costing me in creditcard interest!"
He did NOT say, "It is costing me $5000 in credit card interest."

Hi Floh,

I read this post BEFORE we took the rental out.. I assumed "it wouldn't happen to me" after all, we had some mates 1.5 years ago who had an OK experience with NQ..
please read the post you started so long ago. Hope you're still online.

Did YOU get the monies back, and how long, and with reasonable explanation and interest covered????

I just checked my post - some people can't read properly and just shoot off but anyway, thanks to the slightly more switched-on person who saw that my post was written in English - the credit card is costing me, at 1.2% per month, about $60AUD per month (please don't post anything about xyz card is cheaper..)- the first month's interest - yes, during the rental - I am happy to cover- but the interest that was due covering the period AFTER the deposit was promised to have been returned - I am not willing to cover.
The company have steadfasteadly ignored my Emails, and the phone message I left - where I am calling from at the moment the phone is $1USD /Min to Aus and from experience can be 5-10 mins on hold...
Sooo... I have lodged a complaint with the OFT so a file can be opened on the company, and VISA card services have been made aware of "issues" with this company - I will be supplying more information so they can act further.
I recommend this is an advisable course of action if this happens to anyone else.. contact OFT and your card service company.
Cheers,
BoshBen

Its unfortunate however I think this is a small case as you can see many
happy customers listed on their site.

They seem genuine enough.

Angry Re: NQ Rentals going bankrupt???

Well, some update.
The company agreed to refund the $5000 AUD plus the $60AUD that I was charged by my creditcard company.

This was paid into my creditcard account....
However, I contacted the credit card company who told me the relevant exchange rates for all the dates in question, did some maths and the amount paid into my account seven weeks late was, unfortunately, almost £200GBP less than if it had been paid in at the time when the company promised (and were obliged to by their own contract).
The amount actually taken out on 15th October was $5000AUD which came to £2083.62.
On the 13th December, $5000 AUD was credited back to the account, now worth £1916.71...
but
if it had been paid back in around the 9th-12th November, the $5000AUD would have been about £2112.76...
So there is a big difference between the two extremes mentioned here -
£196.05....
So, now we're "in discussion" to come to an acceptable agreement, as I am now only £196 down....

the saga continues...

Question Re: NQ Rentals going bankrupt???

I must admit, there are some very positive anonymous posts on this, and some other newsgroups... The fact that anonymous separate posts are made identically seems a little suspect.

Just be up front about things, can you?

Well I guess they used our bond of 5000,-§ to pay you back, Boshben....
It's been more than one month and we didn't get our money back from NQ Rentals. We contacted Visa and the Office of Fare Trade of Queensland.

This is no small case to us.... 5000,-§ is a lot of money!

I wish i had read this thread before i hired my campervan from NQ rentals!

I have same problem. I hired the campervan from 23/12/04 till 26/01/05. the campervan was brought back on time and in good order.

For two months now i have been trying to get my $5000 bond back! Let numerous messages on Neil Chapman (the owners voicemail), set faxes and email. At first i was able to talk to some people (christie James and Patrick the accountant (he left two weeks ago) Now you are only told to direct your query to the owner Neil Chapman and they give you his direct line.

I have lodged a complaint with Cairns Dep of Fair Trading.
I have tried to get Visa to help me, but they have said too much time has lapsed since the money was taken out my account. They said they will on good faith try and contact the merchants bank.

I am worried,
NQ rentals is still in business though, and their reservation department is getting all the calls.
The guy i talked to today, Adam, said they were having quite a few calls concerning this issue.

So i do not think this is an isolated incident,

Yoshi

I saw your posting on www.camping.com.au in Australia and thought I would follow it up here.

I think the problem may be NQ Rentals is owned by the same individual who owns Matilda Caravans and that was placed into voluntary administration some months ago. The VA is:
Quaid Auctioneers
37 Lake Street
Cairns Qld 4870
0740513300
Mobile 0418773258
I think at this point NQ looks like it is not far off the same fate and I would be very careful about dealing with them. You may wish to dispute the transaction though your bank or credit card company I think there is enough evidence to substantiate it is being done on a regular basis and the company has a marginal track record at best if nothing else if they (the credit card co) get enough complaints they will remove their (NQ Rentals) facility and they will not be able to trade without one. Good luck let me know how you go.
