Re: This is QI
The problem I can see straight away is its a record of where these crimes took place without balancing factors so makes city centers look higher risk.

Still some quite surprising results when you look at some of the 'darker' areas, you can pick the ones that are the most likely gathering places for drinking e.g. Takapuna on the North Shore of Auckland (which is likely to increase the prevalence fights, assaults and such like) and you kind of expect it from some rough old holes like Huntly but there's quite a few sleepy little towns and suburbs like Pukekohe that are up there.
It does at least provide a more than anecdotal picture of what you can expect of those place and gives some further perspective of which suburbs to avoid - most of South Auckland and large chunks of Hamilton.

I can comment on Pukehohe because I know it quite well. It's basically two towns, one a pleasant village that you would want to live in, the other... well not so much. Interestingly, some locals call the other 'the dark side' which is a bit contentious given its demographic make-up.
You tell which is which by looking at house prices.

Makes Russell look a bit dodgy.
Then you see that it is 3 incidents in a population of 790.
Then you realise that they are comparing the number of permanent residents (790) with the number of incidents.
They don't say if the incidents involved permanent residents, or just trippers off cruise ships and campers at the Top 10. Annual tourist numbers must be enormously higher than the permanent population so the whole calculation is flawed.
Then again, after a long boring winter the occasional octogenarian may lay about with his Zimmer frame in the Duke. If it was Saturday night he might even manage to hit a couple of others before running out of breath.
