Seems Labour has had advice that reducing immigration may cause a recession. Maybe theyve changed their mind despite it being one of their major election promises.

The building industry is the only thing keeping the economy going, has been for a long time
I'm surprised its taken this long for Labour to kick this promise in to touch

131,600 migrant arrivals and 61,600 departures in the year to December 2017. So net is still 70,000.

So plenty of hot air from the current government but no changes noted to date. Visa presses still running at full tilt!

Edit to add context:
- RBNZ currently forecasting 3.8% GDP growth but that is expected to be revised downwards next week due to the disappointing CPI data (CPI rose just 0.1% in the last quarter of 2017.)
- The government are considering adding some more progressive measures to their budgeting forecasts. Unclear if this will have any substantial impact.

Still rising at this point:

Net gain for the month of January 2018 was 8577, up 1.6% compared to January last year.

Iain Lee-Galloway comment on immigration:
“I would encourage people not to focus on the overall number. We’re not focusing on the number. We don’t have a target.”
If that the isn't the sound of HMNZS New Zealand trying to execute an abrupt U-turn I don't know what is .

Uk sqkm =242,495

NZ sqkm =268,021

UK population = 65.64m

NZ population = 4.749m

Not going to count sheep, it is just not fair

Numbers migrating to NZ one would have thought must be the 'desirables' based upon the screening method. UK is sure getting the 'undesirables'

Question Re: Net migration hits new record

I was reading an interesting article from the World Economic Forum and stumbled across this little chart:

What do you think, do you feel materially better off in 2018 than 2005?

McKinsey & Co. state that: In the period 1993 to 2005 across industrialised economies just 2% of households had flat or falling incomes, between 2005 and 2014 65-70% of households across industrialised economies had flat or falling incomes.

Interesting, it's also funny how a nations happiness is not reflected at all by changes such as these.

Slight slowing in net numbers, due to increase in departures more than any government policy:

Again just to re-iterate Labours policy position:
In total, these changes are estimated to reduce net migration by 20,000-30,000.
As of yet they've not actually implemented any policy changes of course .

So it looks as though the one/main issue highlighted is that houses are not being built to provide homes for new immigrants. No mention of drain on resources. A mention of extra cars on the road.

Presumably if an immigrant had to buy a plot of land and build on it then this would increase the housing stock in line with immigration. Or is this too simplistic a view?

I would have thought the immigration test would mean that new arrivals have''means''

Anyway, the good news is that the net figure raises the IQ)
