ANZ Bank CEO David Hisco comments "Immigration has been great for New Zealand. We are a harmonious, diverse and inclusive society. But Auckland's housing, roads, public transport and schools are struggling to cope. Let's have an honest and sensible debate about immigration using facts rather than prejudice to see if we should push the pause button."

One of the problems is that anyone who dares to question immigration is accused of being racist or xenophobic - just like in the UK actually.

Depends on the tone of the debate, there is quite a difference between the tone that the BNP or EDL take and arguing for a more sustainable policy. We also have a lot of people who seem to have no comprehension of the impact a poorly planned immigration policy has out in the real world.

BNZ Banks head of research also points out the same issue, at the moment New Zealand is experiencing record migration but no perceptible net benefit.

Those who benefit from immigration, planned or otherwise, use racism accusations to shut people up and it often works. My fellow lefties seem particularly prone to it.

That economist who left the Reserve Bank recently has also indicated he is strongly in favor of a more dynamic policy. However PM John Key has deflected calls for review.

Labour seems to side with the economists.

Labour just wants to protect the jobs/wage rates of its unionist paymasters and wouldn't recognise an economic strategy if it bit them.

And National just wants to protect their oligarch paymasters who benefit from driving down wages and wouldn't recognise an economic strategy if it bit them.

So we need a new political party to straddle the gap - how about a libertarian laissez faire grouping that gets politicians out of our lives :-)

Is there really a shortage in Chefs, Cafe and Retail Managers or could these professions be filled from within New Zealand?

And what exactly is a 'Retail Supervisor' - I assume it's the 'adult' that supervises all the children that work on the checkouts? The checkout chick that has escalated to higher duties and now holds the magic key that checks IDs and lets people buy booze.

Those are Chinese/Thai chefs for all those Asian restaurants - that was the standard route into Canada too.

A lot of people with retail experience don't want to work the weekends, so I guess it might be hard to find good staff prepared to work hours that don't fit well with family life.

Quite a few Indian chefs too and not just in curry shops.

Surprised to see Indian staff at the Maison 8 restaurant in Waikanae, and I wonder why Cob & Co have blocked off their kitchen now when it used to be part of the experience to see the chefs cooking?
